I just bought a rebuilt steering rack for my s13 for a little more then $300. I don't want a flake of rust on this thing, and it's going to see salty WI winters. Is there any paint or coating I can get for it to prevent rust? Thanks.

where did you get your rack? how did you know you needed another one? i am trying to pin-point a bad shake i am having once i reach 55-65, after that it becomes smooth again until i run a curve. i am afraid that it might be the rack but dont know how to tell. thanks

I'm in Wisconsin.

I have very bad bump steer, a loose feeling during hard cornering, a wierd shake that only happens sometimes, usually triggered by hitting a bump with only one wheel and/or highish speeds. Also the dust boots are broke, and if you poke them a certain way it squirts out PS fluid.

I got the rack and pinion from Autozone for ~$330 + $105 core charge. I'm not 100% positive but if it bolts up, but get the HICAS rack if you can, it has a quicker ratio. I got the HICAS rack but it's for my HICAS s13.

edit- I also have 3 out of 4 new tie rods so I know it's not them.

so i should feel a difference in my steering? my boots are torn but i dont understand what you mean when you say if you poke them they squirt fluid. did have to exchange your old one or what, what is the core charge for? are you going to install yourself? is it hard?

Core charge they charge you up front and then you get it back when you return your old one.

I never felt a difference in my steering until just recently when it started getting really bad. I was on a tight 270 degree on ramp and I was taking it real fast and I could tell something wasn't right.

Like I said, If I poke the boot in towards the inside of the steering rack, fluid squirts out. This may or may not happen on a bad rack.

I will be doing it myself sometime this week. I'll let you know how hard it is. It looks like it will be very straight forward though. Any more questions, hit me up on AIM, spitzz7985, or e-mail, [email protected].

Now, anyone have any rust prevention techniques???

alright thanks a lot, now i would think that autozone should have some spray on rust proofer, i would imagine its like painting as far as the prep. i would just ask them to see what they say. well thanks again and i will check back to see how it went.

any other thoughts anyone? I was thinking about using that spray on tar stuff, like the stuff that comes from the factory on the underbody. Would that work to keep the rust out? Would I have to get it sandblasted first?

Undercoat would work (the stuff you were talking about). You can buy it at most auto parts stores.

check the front frame rails for rot damage inside the engine bay. they're prone to stress fracture. once it separates from the strut tower the alignment's shot and so is the car.

would I have to sandblast the rack first? it looks like it is powdercoated.

I wouldn't bother--its rubber/adhesive, and its pretty powerful stuff. Sticks to everything, and is a pita to get off if you get it on yourself, so be warned.

doesn't this carry a lifetime warranty? just save the receipt/make copies of it...

I 2nd the rubberized undercoating; the original owner had this done to my car when she 1st purchased it... it's still under there to this day.

Is that for the HICAS rack? Where I went the non HICAS rack was considerably less then the HICAS rack.

Well I got the rubber undercoating stuff and after two coats dried on the rack, I picked it up and all of it peeled right off, taking the base factory coat of paint with it. I know that undercoating is good ****, but the base paint was absolute ****. So now I have a bare metal rack. I said **** it and ordered some POR-15. When that gets here I'll coat it and put it on.

Is there really a difference in a HICAS rack? Does it bolt up ok?

It should bolt up. If it doesn't, return it and say you wanted a 2 wheel steering model not the 4 wheel steering model. It has a quicker steering ratio from what I hear. You non-Hicas guys, how many steering wheel turns lock to lock?
