'93 240sx, just put in a new starter. It makes a high-pitched whine for about half a second after the motor starts. I think the bendix is not retracting in time and the flywheel is catching it and spinning it forward really fast. I already tried loosening and re-torquing the bolts.

Normally, when a starter makes a noise, it means the starter needs shimming. However, I can't seem to find any reference to starter shims on the 240sx.

Since there seems to be no such thing as a starter shim for a 240sx, could I have gotten a faulty starter? I need to drive the car like this for a couple of weeks until I can get into a garage again. I hope it doesn't damage anything.

if it whines, you're right to think it's faulty.

Put in another new starter, same noise.

I had a mechanic friend drop by and listen to it... he said it's just the starter spinning momentarily after disengaging. The old starter didn't make much noise because it was very old and weak.
