I just recently picked up a 93 s13 ka24de 5speed.

When I test drove the car it seemed to start up great and drove good. (Other than powersteering delete)

Well.. Since its not my primary vehicle I drove it home and then parked it. Went to go start it up the next day to look over everything to give it a little tune-up and to get to know the car, could not get it to start up.

I could crank it over, and it would fire for a second and than die. This could happen for like 5 or 6 tries. Then it would start up. When cold it seems to idle a bit over a grand. If I give it any throttle at all when cold it will just die out/ bog out. If I push the throttle and hold it to like 2 grand it kind of pops or backfires? Is this a sign of limpmode?

Once the motor is starting to warm up, like a quarter of the way to opperating temp, I can shut it off, and start it up no problems at all, and I can apply as much throttle as I want and RPM's seem to raise smoothly with no issues.

I have been searching around the forums and have tried the following:
-Checked spark plug gap
-Checked over all grounds
-Checked connections of wires
-Checked for vac leaks
-Checked ignition timing (20-22ish degrees)

I also checked the ecu for codes and got a code (13) for temp sensor.
I changed that and still no success.

Is there something Im possibly overlooking? Or does anyone have any suggestions?

Im new to the ka24de but have sunk too many hours into dsm's. Figured it was time for a change.

Cheers :spitout:

Alright so tonight I cleaned the air filter and really cleaned the maf. That didn't help anything.

Now I have re-rechecked the grounds.

Anyone?

A motor needs three things to run. Fuel air and spark. That is where I would start. Pull the dizzy cap off to look for corrosion, clean the points or replace the cap. Change the fuel filter and make sure you have good fuel at the rail. You can also put an inline spark tester while starting it to see if your losing spark on one or a couple of the cylinders. Good luck.

Edit: although it doesn't really sound like it, could be a vacuum leak too. Check all the vacuum hoses you can get to.

Yeah, I'm agreeing with him. Check the ignition system. Sounds to me like a circuit is closing when it warms up. Since pretty much everything in the system is electronically controlled, I'd try the dizzy first too.
