My Mother in law is in the market for something new, and has zeroed in on a new Rogue. It seems like there's an abundance of 2016s available with some decent discounts. I have noticed that they're manufactured in either Korea, Japan, or in the USA (presumably in Smyrna TN?). Has there been any difference in early quality issues between the three? From what I can tell the 2017 redesign is a minor cosmetic deal, but am I overlooking anything that would make it worth the extra cost of buying one over a 2016?

the good:
the engine is solid, dating back to 2008. we all know this engine is time tested, starting from the old sentra.
the awd system is amazingly well designed. i got my 2008 rogue stuck in snow, i swore i was done for - and the rogue got out without an issue. i dont know what they use, but with the right tire combo, the awd kicks major butt.

the bad:
the transmission = leaves a lot to be desired. its common for issue, its now less common to replace. but the chance is still out there.
the interior build quality is poor. the 08-12's were known for the cheap plastic, rocking driver seats, loud cabin noise, stiff ride, etc. it felt like driving the PT cruiser.
the 2014+ radio/infotainment units i hear suck. major lagging, needing constant resets, etc.
small things constantly failed: headlight adjustment motor, pcv valve, evap valve, gas cap, brake light switch, gear shift solenoid, (all under 60k)
weak heat
weak a/c

the ugly:
the brakes. OMG - i have never seen such piss poor quality brakes. look back at the history on here, and you will see that grandparent-style drivers were getting 30k out of their pads & rotors. did i mention the calipers have faulty seals, leading to costly repairs? ya- i had to change all 4 calipers, rotors, pads, prior to 50k.
the front CV axles - fail at around 75-90k. idk what it is, but the half-shaft seizes in the small carrier, and that makes for a nightmare. in fact, a member on here (who also follows me on instagram) just faced the same issue, and called a quits - and traded it in for a bmw. i get messages all the time about these darn fron cv-axles.
the transmission goes into limp mode, out of nowhere. usually mid intersection, where people almost got killed. this is well documented on here. its either the transmission or the brake light switch.
the transmission whines, when in hot weather
the transmission goes into limp mode, when its hot outside, and you are on hills.

final words: i know i spoke a lot about the 2008 styles, but not much has changed other than cosmetics. the 2014+ is nothing more than lipstick on a pig. buyer be warned. tell her to check out the new hyundai tucson - its gorgeous.

If she's not buying a 2017 SL w prem and plat pkgs, and can get a good deal on a 2016, she should def consider the 2016

Wow... none of that sounds good. Any thoughts on the Mazda CX-5? I like the fact that it has an A/T vs. CVT, but don't know much about Mazda reliability. I think I'm going to try to get her to check out the CX-5, Tuscon (good call on that, I hadn't thought of it), and the Honda CRV. She's already looked at the RAV4, and Chevrolet Equinox, and had a strong preference for the Rogue over those.

I purchased my 2015 rogue when they were being cleared out for the 2016s. The savings were too good to be passed up for the newer model. I have had it for over a year now and like it just as much as the day I bought it. Smooth ride, quiet , good gas mileage and most important of all my wife loves it. I tested the mazda cx-5...too small....rava4....too plain and unfriendly ride, honda...unremarkable....suburu....too austere. The 2015 and 2016 rogue are noted for their reliability. Do your homework and you will see what I mean. As for the cvt....ya years back they made some bad ones but in terms of technology that was a lifetime ago. Somethings are just luck of the draw. My dad purchased a new chevy malibu back in 2009 and his transmission only lasted a couple of years. Besides more car makers are using them in their vehicles now including the honda crv. Try it yourself and you will understand why your mother-in- law likes it and just why it is so popular and why sales of the cx-5 or tucson pale in comparison to the no. of rogues sold.

Take his advice with a grain of salt. His experience is all based on the FIRST generation rogue apparently. The Second Generation is arguably much better with much of what he complains about fixed. Including the CVT transmission.
just because i owned the 1st gen, doesnt mean i dont see and hear on here plenty similar complaints about the 2nd gen. the 2nd gen has similar poor build quality on their cars. the radio has been nothing but a disaster i hear. similar cvt issues continue to persist, etc etc.

and if you want even worse issue, buy a mazda. its a ford after-all.

If you go by SUV popularity you must know that Nissan rogue is 3rd highest selling suv in america. Sales numbers are just little bit lower than honda crv and rav4. Hyundai Tucson or mazda cx5 arent even in top 20.

That's a bit inaccurate, not to mention outdated. By and large Ford sold re-badged Mazda products, not the other way around. Ford and Mazda parted ways six years ago.

I butchered that. I clicked edit in stead of reply.

Sorry not sorry; mazda is a car for those who trade in before 80k. Otherwise enjoy the oil consumption, trans issues, and poor resale value.

What the hell happened to my post? lol
Looks like someone went in and edited it? How can that be?

My post now shows up as a quote and it looks like I wrote a reply that I never wrote at all. Can mods just go in and edit what you wrote? That's pretty scary.
