Hey Guys,

My mech installed my engine w/new front & rear main seals (along w/other usual suspects).

Anyways there is an oil leak so infiniti looked at it and determined it to be the rear main seals.

what could possible make it leak back there is the seal is new?

thanks.

Inproper installation is the only reason I can think of if you bought a new seal.

Wes,

Can the rear main seal be re-installed without having to buy a new one?

The rear main seal is sealed by RTV... He will have to remove it, make sure he removes ALL THE OLD RTV and then reinstall.

Sounds like they *forgot* to use assembly lube when they put it in. ..or didn't know enough.

Sounds like a freebie to me. I'd be pissed.

Assembly lube on the crank/seal interface. So that the seal doesn't burn up when the crank spins inside of it, burns up real easy and leaks.

You have to remove the transmission - so after that - it's about 15 minutes. I think transmission R/R is about 6-8 hours.

Frank,

Before your tech. removes the transmisison again - be sure to check to make sure there's not a puddle of oil under the plenum in the valley! I had a leaking PCV hose (the one that comes up from right over the bell housing. It was split and caused the oil thrown up from the crank to puddle in the valley. The dealership diagnosed it as a rear main seal - but once I found and corrected the PCV leak the problem went away - so the rear main was fine.
