Car: 1991 Q45

Post

Hi,
I just purchased a 1991 Q45 for a "steal" I think (my first). It had been sitting in this guy's yard and he had been laid off for a year and a half, he lost his driver's lic. and had taken the tags and insurance off of the car and his ex came over and key the hood and beat on the sunroof (damaging it). I will have to go have a full diagnostic this week. It had been sitting for at least 12 months. I checked fluids and had and oil change and the engine runs and ecellerates great, cold a/c and handles surprisingly sporty. But other than the sunroof and the hood I have noted the following problems: (2 days driven approx. 300 miles-graduations everywhere)

1. smoetimes while cruising it will sputter/jerk as if getting too much gas or not enough air/fire to combust properly. Also gas mileage ain't that great! But better than my 95 Chevy Tahoe. My thoghts are MAF/Fuel Injectors may be dirty/timing off (guy did not look like the type that would buy premium gas as the manual says it requires)
Any suggestions?

2. the ACTSUS light comes on and of periodically. My thoughts: IDK
Any suggestions?

3. it appears to need an allignment as it pulls slightly to the right. My thoughts: get an allignment, but are there any special rules wiwth this car that I need to be aware of?
Any suggestions?

4. Looking at the engine, DIY will never be the same, lol, how do I change spark plugs and wires.....or is it a nissan thang?
Your thoughts?

I greatly appreciate any info you can give me on getting this car in tip top condition because I really enjoy the driving experience.

Thanx in advance,
Dic

How much money and time do you have?

First the Girl who destroyed the car should be living on the streets, I would sue her till she was on the street at least. What the f*** did the car ever do to her????

Was it parked on grass? (Undercarriage rot)

Sure not all of the above applies to you (I think) but its damn good reading.

But check the MAF voltage with a Nissan Consult or Laptop Consult connector. Make sure all the injectors are clean with a BG fuel injector flush. Make sure the intake is clean (Plenum, runners, Idle Air Control Valve and Throttle body).

2. Check the Active Suspension codes in the service manual: http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/Q45/1994_Q45/fa.pdf (God help you if its a costly problem).

3. The Active Suspension is a little different when it comes to an alignment which is also covered in the service manual: http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/Q45/1994_Q45/fa.pdf

4. The plugs like everything else on this engine are a pain, its a coil on plug system.

Honestly if you don't have much money (I assume because you said the car was a "steal") then you should sell it on NICO. These car's are a nightmare when they are in okay shape but yours is basically destroyed form the sound of it. And it has Active Suspension which is twice a nightmare.

Congradulations, depending upon your standards and desire to restore to as new operating and performance conditions, you will spend anywhere between $3,000 and $10,000 - not including any cosmetic improvements like paint or body work.

Best thing to do is pay an Infiniti certified technican 1.5-2.5 hours to document the defects he finds then price each and list here and we can help you perform triage.

Simultaneously find and download the *.pdf FSM for the 1994 while looking for the hard FSM that every Q45 came with brand new.

Spend a few months studying the systems and acquiring specialty tools and test equipment to evaluate.

Apples to apples the 1991 Q is much less difficult than a 2010 model due to less electronics. Obviously 4 speed AT are simpler than 7 speeds, rwd is simpler than 4 wheel drive.
Some 1991 systems especially in engine and HVAC are compatible to the brand new Ford Mustang 5 liter V8 just as though Ford stole the design and tried to duplicate it more cheaply.

Congratulations on the 91 Q45! :)

I recently purchased a 91 (the basic model) from a friend who is also a clasic car collector. I'm really enjoying learning about this car from this forum.
