I have found a site that will rebuild my 2001 Maxima ECM. They will give me a lifetime warranty with the stipulation that my IACV and TPS is replaced at the same time. This is fine with me considering that the dealer wanted me to do the same thing for $1,600.

My questions are, 1) after receving the rebuilt ECM, will I have to take it to dealer for keys relearn after installation? 2) After putting on new IACV, ECM and TPS, can I try to start the car before taking to dealer or will this damage one of the above and 3) If I don't need the keys relearned, can I do just the IACV relearn procedure on my own.

I had a P0505 code and I can see and smell where the ECM is fried. I will also disconnect the motor mounts since the dealer says that this is what cause the problems in the beginning. Sorry for the long post, but I need to save as much money as possible at this time. Thanks.

After installing the refurbished ECM, IACV and TPS, start the car. If the car started, you're lucky as the NATS code in the ECM is intact. You can then follow the procedure (link to FSM provided earlier) for IAVL. The IAVL requires NO LOAD condition to establish Idle - aircon, radio, lights, etc must BE OFF. After that, drive it on city streets for several minutes, then take it to the highway and do several WOTs (you don't have to overspeed) to allow ECM to re-learn engine parameters.

If the car won't start, then the ECM memory has been cleared and you have no choice but to take it to the dealership for reprogramming. Bring all the keys with you.
