Car: Thinking my friend and I have mechanical skills

Post

Does anyone else encounter new problems with their SR everyday? Also, my Sr is still backfireing. I'm juat running the donpipe, I don't know If that makes a difference. What can I do to make my SR ultra reliable? I've already desided to replace the headgasket, springs and add some RAS. I'm only going to go for about 350-400hp. How long do you think I can run that on the bottom end? Should I go ahead and replace the cam gears and shafts when I replace the head gasket? (this iwould all be before the turbo upgrade) I'm leaning heavily twords the PE 1820, so what are your suggetions of making my stock s13 and my t25 the best running engine it can be. thanks, Scott

My baby

if you want to keep it as reliable as possible, then keep your hands off of it and keep it as close to stock as possible. THe more you upgrade and change parts, the less reliable it becomes.

You don thave to replace your cams when you do the headgasket, although it would be easy. If you want aftermarket ones, then go for it. You dont really need to replace the cam gears unless they are worn. By getting aftermarket cams, that negates the need for adjustable cam gears.

IF it is backfiring, check that your cam/crank sensor is working goiod and that the wiring is all good, including the shielded wires. THose carry the signal and should be shielded to prevent EM interference from other componenets.Just something to consider.

I am in the same boat as you, thes14project, finding new problems everyday. It seems when I get one thing figured out, another problem rears its ugly head. I love the car and engine so I will continue working on it until it is perfect.

Focus on your intake, fuel and ignition systems. If you are having any problems, it will 95% of the time be cured after you've discovered some anomoly in one of those systems.

I've been driving my SR for about 15,000 miles at this point. The EGTs sit at 850 when idle, and around 1200-1400 when cruising. It accelerates smoothly and the only time I hear anything close to a backfire, is the spent fuel being burnt off after WOT acceleration.

When does your motor backfire? At idle?

Your car is probably fine. You might have a leak somewhere in the exhaust, but you said that you're just running a down pipe? I take that to believe that you have no exhaust from the downpipe back? If so, you're definitely prone to hearing something that sounds like a back fire.

Werd.

Sounds like the extra fuel that gets pushed out is igniting. Makes for a nice light show. ;)
