I've been looking to get rid of my '07 Mazda 6s for a little while and I've always had a soft spot for the G35/350Z. Today I'm going to a local independent dealership with about 6-7 2006 G35 coupes. I am leaning towards the one manual they have with only about 25k miles, but cost of ownership has me concerned, and I figured this is the perfect place to ask for some input.

First issue: tires. Checking tirerack.com, it seems that a set of 4 tires would run about $750 for the large, 19" rims that come on all the manual transmission coupes from that year, whereas the automatic's smaller stock rims would only cost me around $450 for the tires. I know these wouldn't need to be replaced all that often, but the price difference is significant and I am sure that I will be tempted to engage in some sporty driving after feeling the power increase from my current car.

Of course, the larger rims DO look pretty nice...

Second issue: availability. Like I said, this particular dealer only has one manual model in stock, and there aren't many more options in my area that have the features/mileage/colors that I prefer. If I go with the automatic, I have quite a bit more options and haggling room.

Are there any other differences in the cost of ownership comparing the automatic to manual? Anything else I should take into consideration? Talk me into buying the car with the extra HP!

There is a price to own a sport car. It will go thru tires like it should. LOL

Same goes to the brakes also.

Avalability is well it is used car so you have to search and find. There are many manuals so just don't give up the search.

Make sure you testdrive the manual. If you already there testdrive the 07+ sedan also. Unless you really eager to get the coupe you'll find quite upgrade over the first generation. Also faster than the coupe. Just so you know and won't be upset when you hit the track. LOL

Tires are not cheap for that car, I had one for 4 years...but it's worth it. Look at it this way, if you avoid an accident because of your expensive tires and keep your family safe, it's worth it.

Remember that any Infiniti comes with a 70k or 72month power-train warranty...so expensive stuff is covered.

As for the G, you'll love Infiniti. I sold my 05 coupe on Wednesday, and I'm buying an 09 sedan on Saturday

Thanks for your input, it would really take a lot to talk me out of buying the car at this point, but a little positive reinforcement never hurt.

Upon doing some more research on these forums, I noticed a few mentions of an oil consumption problem with that particular model. Unfortunately, the search function isn't working for me currently to determine just how serious this problem is and how to make sure the car I'm looking at isn't affected by it. Any info or links you can share on this topic?

One more thing to consider is that the oil consumption issue is with the Manual G's......possibly a reason to go with an automagic.

I had an 05 6MT and it never burned a drop of oil. It's not ALL REVUP engines. It may be reduced if you use a higher weight oil...I used 10w-40 in a good synthetic (royal purple).

Welcome to NICO

Have you considered a 6sp manual sedan?

Mine uses about a qt of oil between oil changes at 3500 miles.I've done 33 oil changes thus far

Make me an offer so I can get a new 2010 G37.

Only 108k highway miles and never been over 5k RPM

BTW by rotating my tires every other oil change, I got 47k on the first set of Bridgestone Turanza and 52k on thesecond set. I'm on my third set now

Well, I found a very nice '06 with about 39k miles on it for sale at $18,900. I was about to pull the trigger until they told me what they would offer for my trade.

Long story short, anybody interested in an '07 Mazda 6S with 37k miles?
