Installing the common 300zx brake upgrade the ebrake system and parts are consistently overlooked. Recently I had an inquiry about upgrades to the Z ebrake drum. The Ebrake can be a very effective tool in drifting for controlling double apex and larger drifts.
The aftermarket seems to be at a complete lack of readily available upgrades for this issue. The common fix is to use a hydraulic ebrake tapping the rear disc system, or adding an additional caliper to the disc. These systems may be superior in some respects, but can be quite costly as well.
When presented with this problem, I came to a solution through one of my favorite brake component companies, Porterfield Enterprises. The Porterfield Drift Brake Shoe is the perfect solution to a high quality turning brake system while avoiding the high costs. A repaded OEM Nissan brake shoe is used, applied is the R4-S compound base, custom blended at RPsport’s request. The 300zx ebrake utilizing the Porterfield Drift Brake Shoe functions as an excellent turning brake; instead of simply using old or stock equipment during a Z brake upgrade.
From order to delivery the custom job took 4 weeks to complete. Hopefully in the future I will be able to inventory a few of these for quick delivery if interest peaks. Otherwise an expected 4 week order time plus core exchange is in order.
I have been a large proponent of Porterfields Carbon-Kevlar brake compound because of its superior fade quality and aggressive bite. In specific the R4 Compound is my favorite though it is a much more track oriented compound for disc brakes. In this application I took into account that longevity was of immense importance because of the labor required to replace this shoe. Balanced against that, very strongly was the fact that a very sharp bite was needed to lock the wheels under high speed and high load drifting conditions. To accomplish these means the R4-S compound, Porterfields Street Compound, was blended with additional strands of carbon fiber to increase rigidity through the pad, and increase the bite.
These customizations to the ebrake shoe will make for a very aggressive drift brake, that will bite and last through many competitions. I am very excited about this project because it blends an effective solution while being cost conscious and truly unique.
Porterfield also makes many other disc brake pads readily available for all makes of Nissan brake calipers. Choosing between the R4 and R4-S compound, you can fit the perfect braking upgrade for very little money in comparison to large rotor and caliper upgrades. I have personally used the R4-S compound quite successfully on many of my own cars, and would not drive on anything less.
