I just received a new 2012 Altima Coupe as my company car. Why does the inside smell like toxic plastic? I have to leave the windows open all the time to get the smell out and it's still there. Has anyone else noticed this horrible chemical smell? I cannot even smell the new leather seats over this odor. Any suggestions on how to get the plastic to leech out all the chemicals so I can breathe again? Thank you.

Welcome! Never heard of a plastic smell. Its not the regular "new car" smell?

No, it actually burns your throat. We leave the back two windows up when we drive to keep it tolerable. New car smell? Who doesn't love that smell? This is definitely something else. Maybe the dealership used some kind of dressing inside that car that stinks. Not sure. I am going to call and ask although when I googled this problem there are many others with the same problem.

To clarify; you must have a sedan instead of a coupe. A coupe's back 2 windows are fixed. The smell you mentioned could be coming from the engine compartment. Maybe a piece of plastic touching the exhaust manifold? I've also heard that dealers will put a leather conditioner on the seats when it is not needed.

Yes it is the sedan. The smell is even in the car when it's turned off and all 4 windows are up. I put my nose on the seats and it's definitely not the seats. I googled this issue and there are many people complaining about the smell. The only advice I can see is to wait it out and eventually the plastic will leach all of it's chemicals out and the smell should disappear hopefully before we ingest too many of these toxins.

I took mine into my gf's dad's dealership to get painted and when I got it back there was this strong smell of acetone for about a week from some product they used to detail the interior.
