i'm sealing the deal on a 2006 M45 with 119K on it
anything I should watch out for on these M's? as in known issues and what maintenance should have preformed at the current mileage and what service to expect coming soon.
I saw a sticky about installing a aftermarket transmission cooler - is that something I should be worried about?
i'm coming over from the Q45 forum - I still own my Q

With our transmissions, we don't usually worry about coolers. I doubt it would hurt though.

At 100k, no major items will surprise you like how the timing belt driven cars are. It would be nice to check if the fluids (including ATF) have been flushed or replaced, then keep up on it.

The camshaft and crankshaft sensor will probably be replaced already or going at some point in the unknown future. Bushings and shocks/ struts might be less than spectacular as well. These shouldn't worry you.

Recalls for the gas pedal should be performed already. There is another recall for the Takata airbag, which might not have been done yet. Along with the airbag issue, check the condition of your dash. It might be cracking. These shouldn't worry you that much either.

What should scare you are pinging, tapping, rattling noises from the engine. Yes, these engines are sometimes noisy, but the VK45DEs had oil consumption issues, which when not addressed could end catastrophically. I test my cars just like I like to sell them - from a cold start. If it's a dealership, tell them you'll show up at 3pm, then surprise them as soon as they open. Listen to the engine, record video if you're uncertain and we can try to advise you.

Apart from carfax, call a dealership with the VIN and if any work has been done l at an Infiniti dealership, they'll have comments.
Good luck, this platform is mostly reliable.

I thought they fixed the oil burning issue in the 05 and up VK45's
I will check if the recall services were preformed
i know transmission has been fully serviced and regularly serviced
i'm not too worried about sensors and stuff, that rattling noise doesn't happen to be coming form the timing chain does it? It seems to be a common issues with infiniti engines, first gen Q was plagued with them and now I just went to test drive a 2016 Q70 V8 at the dealership and it also had a pretty noticeable chain rattle at start up and idle
I think i'm going to seal the deal if there is no oil burning issue or timing chain issue

With these the noise isn't the chain. By the time you hear the tapping, you most probably have rod knock. Otherwise, I wouldn't worry.

Another issue I forgot to add, tramlining. Something in the suspension geometry that makes this large sedan stick to the road so wonderfully also makes it wander around following cracks. Some tire brands might wear faster, but it's not usually too serious of an issue.

Fortunately, the tramlining on our cars is easily "cured" by using good tires! Get Michelin Pilot Sports (like the Super Sports which I love or the all-season AS3+ if you prefer all-season) or Continental DW (or DWS if you prefer all-season) and the wandering problem goes away.

will do, as far as engine maintenance to keep it from self destructing - on my VH45 I do Penz Oil Platinum 5w-30 with K&N wrench off performance oil filter every 3000 miles - can this setup be used for the VK45? will it agitate the oil burning and other engine failure due to oil burning issue?

Welcome to the M life! As stated before, Cam Angle sensors will likely fail soon. Right side went at 135k and left side went at 153k on my car. Easy quick cheap replacement. Also keep an eye on the oil level. Previous owner had my car from 30k-140k before I got it. He said since he's had it, it will randomly consume oil at varying rates. I just keep an extra 5 qt jug in the trunk and check the oil level every morning before I hop in the car. My headliner started coming lose just after I got the car, I think I've heard others mention the same.

thanks, I keep a emergency Q kit in the trunk which consists of a quart of oil, ATF fluid, tools, and a light weight service jack and some other stuff
