Hey all, just bought a 1994 Black Emerald Q last night and so far I love it! Has some minor problems that im going to enjoy fixing, but overall for the year, and miles (190k) it is in good condition. There are some tears on the drivers seat, the drivers door panel is cracked, and the gas hood props gave out long ago. I know everyone loves some pics, so Ill try to get some up today, looked pretty much stock to me except for the z32tt wheels.

Previous owners were an old couple who were just the 2nd owners of this car, they did all the gaskets, and other engine mainenance items at 130k so engine / transmission wise the thing seems pretty solid.

Seems like the previous owner wasnt hand with electrical stuff because most of the things that need attention on the car are the interior electrionics. Any insight you guys could give me is really appreciated, Ive tried searching for some of this stuff but didnt find much. (start newb flaming)

First thing that is annoying is the auto locks dont work. I have the key fob, and when I press the unlock button it will only unlock the drivers door. Same thing when the lock button is pressed, only the drivers door responds. This also happens when i use the interior controls.. my doors lock/unlock the others dont. Piggy backing on this would be the power windows not responding to the central controls. They will each work individually with their own door controls, but they dont go up/down when I use the controls next to the shifter.

Second is the sunroof. I can hear the motor working when I try to open it, but nothing happens. Not sure how easy this is to get at to see whats wrong, and its not a big concern of mine.

First off welcome, and second does the tilt function work on the sunroof? If it does then it is a problem with lubrication of the track mechanism. If you take the map light/sunroof switch panel off you can gain access to the sunroof motor where there is a manual turn screw. What happens is there is a clutch in the transmission that is slipping which is why you hear the motor running but not doing anything. From what other members have said grease starts to seep into the clutch area as well as the clutch loosening up. If you look in the trunk of the car near the spare tire there is the tool kit that contains a bent Allen wrench that looks like a crank, use this to manually turn the motor. If the sunroof opens that's a good sign as you can clean and lubricate the track with white lithium grease. If it gets stuck or turning it doesn't do anything then you have a problem. Either something broke and is jammed, or the cables broke(unlikely but possible).

I am dealing with a totally jammed sunroof which means I will have to replace the mechanism.

If you have any concerns about clip/screw locations on any of the interior panels you can look at the FSM which should be in the trunk or here under bf:

Well unfortunately I checked the spare tire area and found no tool kit... there wasnt even a tire iron, or a crank for the jack! So Ill have to replace those. However I did have an allen wrench that fit (3/16), and it does crank it back, should have the sunroof hopefully fixed for tomorrow!

Also found a nice little surprise in the compartment thats behind the rear seats, can anyone guess what it might be??

A full on service manual! Looks dealership quality, I flipped through it casually and there were a ton of great wiring diagrams and everything so that should help out tremendously!

Welcome to NICO Charlie. What you found is the hard copy of the Factory Service Manual (FSM). It's our bible since Q45Tech isn't around any more. The electronic copy is easier to read and the 95 FSM has an index, the 94 FSM doesn't. Take your pick in the link:

http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/Q45/

Unless your Q has been in a flood it's pretty unlikely that both center console window switches aren't functioning and 3 of the 4 door lock actuators are gone too. After doing a little diagnostic with the FSM you might lean towards replacing the main LCU, AKA power window amplifier, in the driver front door. There happens to be one for sale in the parts forum for a very fair price and they're simple to replace. If you're wrong it's a good spare to have.

It sounds like you're missing the pouch that had the z-shaped allen wrench for the sunroof. If you're able to crank it open with your wrench it sounds like it may need just a good lube and a clutch adjustment.

What color exterior? Interior? Touring or active? Pics are a must. Let us know if you can't figure out how to post them.

Hey thanks mike I appreciate all of the help! The ext color is Black Emerald, Interior color is tan leather, and thankfully it is the Touring.. Ive been hearing there are a lot of problems with the Active suspension.

Ill take a look at the power window amplifier, hopefully that will fix the problem!

Well still no pictures, sorry about that. But I did get some things done today. Got the sunroof manually retracted, and there was almost no grease at all in there.. what little was still left looked like peanut butter... pretty nasty. Got as much of that cleaned out as possible, and added in some new white grease. Manually cranked it closed, and then tried to use the switch to open it. It opens slightly and then sticks, with a little help from me it will go all the way back, same thing when I try to close it. Not sure if it will get better with time, or not but honestly I am just happy it is kind of working.

Looks just like my car... doesnt look like a touring model, appears you have no trunk mounted spoiler..

Welcome to NICO!! :)

For the sunroof sounds like the cable is broken. You'll have to take the whole sunroof apart to fix it, its a pain.. Live with no sunroof or be ready to take everything on the roof of the car out on the interior of the car..

Ive never heard of ONLY the drivers side working.. Sounds unlikely that 3 of the 4 door control units will go out, but its possible... Note that all 4 doors have a control unit for that door, so you cant mix and match! For instance, if you put in a control unit from the RR door into the LR door, when you press the window switch for the RR door both windows will go down....You should go through the self diagnosis like Goody said.. :)

Very NICE! I remember some really nice cars like that around the Tampa area.

Let me guess that it came from around the Carrolwood area?

I once lived in Brandon from 1992 to 1994 when I worked for Time Warner.

Thanks guys! I bought the car out in the Brandon area, but not sure where the original owner had it. As far as the sunroof issue, it is somewhat working... It will open and close under its own power for the most part, but it seems to still be getting hung up about midway down the track where I have to help it... usually just takes a light amount of finger pressure in the direction I want it to go.

Not exactly sure what model it is, I havent seen a suspension knob like what is mentioned in the user manual, so thats what my guess was based off of... how else can I tell?

As far as the window / lock issue I havent looked too far into it just yet, when I get a chance Im going to go through that manual to see what it recommends.

For my 91 the previous owner had recently replaced the sunroof regulator so that's something I haven't had to address. He did replace a couple of window regularors along the way. Soon after I got the 91 I took the window regulators out for cleaning and lubrication. After regulator cleaning and lubrication, the windows work like a new car.

Do a search on the word regulator with goody90q45 as the author and I bet you will find some helpful information.

Also, have you seen the tech help section of http://www.q45.org ?

I think you'll like the q45 picture on the home page..

Your Q and wheels look nice. Here's a pic of my former 94Q. 245's all around fit nice with no rubbing.

If you can move the sunroof easily enough manually, and it'll move with just a slight bit of manual help, I would go ahead and adjust the sunroof motor clutch.

post570835.html#p570835

I would definitely eliminate any other causes of the problem first - you don't want to give your motor more torque just to break a cable or some other delicate part in the maze of parts buried above your headliner.

Good luck!

Heath

Thanks much Heath! Its a bit too late for me to try this today, but hopefully I can get to this at some point this week, or weekend! What you described in that thread sounds almost exactly like the issue ive been having... itll move, but sometimes it just needs a little help from me to completely close or open.
