Hey Guys -Just purchased a 98 QX-4 with 128k miles on it. It good shape overall - less the check engine light.

Quick backround - not new to forums, cars, or a wrench. Just new to Nissan/Infinitis and SUV's in general..

I am wondering how abouts I pull the ECU codes. I did a search and didnt come up with anything solid (one round a bout way wasn't sure related to QX)..

I guess I should pull the code before I go into everything. My symptoms are what feels to me like a MASSIVE performance loss (are these things ALL this doggy?) and fairly poor gas mileage ( maybe 20 average).. My accelaration is where I'm really hurting..

So I guess I will pull the codes and report back with what I find. Also - please keep in mind that I am 100% UNfamiliar with these cars so if you tell me to "twist the screw on the ECU" I'll probably ask where the ECU is located.

I have driven this car for about 1000 miles but have done nothing but drive it and change the oil once.. Tried a plug swap - but was annoyed by the conjested engine bay and quit..

Thanks for any help you can provide. Love the truck - but I know there has got to be more in it and some better mileage to be found..

Jeff

Some chain stores will retrieve the code for free. OBDII (1996 and later) is a strict set of standards that makes diagnostics easier.

As far as performance....well, let's just say it's not a fast SUV. V6 with 168HP, 196 ft-lbs torque, and weighs over 4000 lbs. 0-60 in 12 seconds. Mileage is rated at 15-19, so 20 is actually decent.

I know Autozone does, or did at least. It might depend on the individual store. Call up your closest Autozone, Pep Boys or Kragen to find out.

Your ECU is probably located under the passenger seat. That's where I've heard of them being located on pathfinders, and it's there on my truck. If you want to do DIY work and diagnostics, skip the Haynes or Chiltons manual and spring for the $20 one day "viewing" subscription at http://www.infiniti-techinfo.com

You can save the service manual section by section, and all TSB's as. pdf files. Just be sure to have a high-speed connection and plenty of time.

Welcome to NICO!

"Mileage is rated at 15-19, so 20 is actually decent."

20 would be extraordinary considering the gearing and weight [4275 lbs].........12 around town in traffic.

"Gas mileage is not a bonus. We averaged only 12.5 miles per gallon in a mix of city and freeway driving, reaching a high of 15.2 mpg on the highway. "......consumerguide story.

Where in MN did you buy the truck?

I used to live in the twin cities and know both Infiniti dealers.

Thanks for all the help guys. I actually bought the truck owner to owner from a gal. She bought it from Lupient in 99 when it was 6 months old..

So Autozone is the place to try - I dont believe we have Kragens up here, I'll try some locals and see.

So maybe this CEL is NOT the real problem I'm having. The real problem I'm having is that I bought the WRONG truck for what I do.. Oh well, live and learn - I love the ride quality and great interior.

Thanks for the help - I know I'll need more soon. What could I sell this thing for? 98 white/sand with 129k miles in good shape all around.

Will do - I cruise the forums - but I'm reading and learning thus far..

Anyone have the procedure to pull codes - or should I just take it somewhere?
