New Owner: Quesiton on Paint Protection Film ("Clear Bra")

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Hi everyone.

Will be picking up a 2015 QX50 next week. This replaces a G35 Sedan.

Question for everyone on Paint Protection File ("Clear Bra"). On the G35, had it on the front of the hood, fenders, and side mirrors. Didn't see the need for it on the front bumpers, as bumpers were plastic, and hence don't really chip.

For those who have gone with paint protection film, what is recommended coverage package. I think front bumper is harder to install and hence more expensive, and I didn't haven't covered the front bumpers in the past, and never got any noticeable chips on the bumpers. How about on the OX50, EX?

Thanks.

Oops, correct my prior point (it's been a few years since I looked into this). Turns out I did get front bumpers done in the past (and front bumper is the hardest part to install the film on, whereas hood is easy). I even noted in other forums that people who skip the bumper generally regret it later.

I have a 2008 EX35 I bought that year and had the full front bumper done and 17" front hood coverage, small front fender area and 2 side view mirrors. I believed I paid $550 for all , way back then. The guy was contracted by my Infiniti dealership. It was a 3M clrear bra I think. The 3M back then is a lot thicker film than Xpel.

After almost 7 years I think I made a great decision to have this installed. My only gripe is I could have covered the whole front hood since I did get just a couple of nicks on areas that was not covered by film. My only advice is to choose the road you will travel to (avoid gravel road , highway construction areas , stay away from semi , do not tailgate trucks that do not have mud guard on the rear tires as stones will project in front of you. Etc...) BTW, EX35 is color silver and it is better to hide scratches etc.

Fast forward today, I have a 2015 Q40 sedan and I did full front bumper, Full front hood , 2 small fender area, door guard 4 doors, door handle cusp) Local installer did it for $1150 out the door. He is certified Xpel Ultimate installer. Car is black that is why I went full front hood. I might need to add rocker panel front back $450 something. I am in SE WI area.

d will Thanks for you comments AWG.

Since it's been awhile since I looked it to this, I was confused in my first post. I forgot that on my old G35, I did 24" front hood, fenders, and full front bumper, plus side mirrors.

Just doing some quick research this time, I found some people saying that bumper is plastic, so no need for film, and I had completely forgotten that I did full front bumper last time (as you don't even realize the film is there when washing the car).

While it's true that plastic bumpers don't "chip", they can get gouged, and scratched and dinged from high velocity hits from stones, and will look bad. So it's important to get the front bumper done if you're going to do a film, eventhough front bumper is more costly.

I see nowdays, many installers have option to do front headlights too, and many people on forums suggest getting front headlights (as the film will protect it from nicks, is perfectly clear, and will help prevent the headlights from looking "foggy".

I had mine done and the installer included headlights and A-pillars. Cost was $595 using SunTek film. A wise investment I think.

dude 1000% get the clear bra!!! 550 is not a bad price.

We bought our ex35 in 2010 new, at 88k miles, the front bumper, under normal driving conditions, the paint is DESTROYED, it is pitted to hell and back.

Nissans/Infinitis are notorious for crap paint, so if you want to protect it for the long term, i highly suggest you get the clear bra.

Update. Well already put on clear bra, less than one week after delivery of new car.

After looking at all the options, I went with 3M Scotchgard PRO. There is a big difference between 3M Scotchgard and Scotchgard PRO. The PRO series is the latest and greatest version, introduced only last year. Whereas the older 3M films (while big sellers) are very old technology, with other films being better. But I think with the new PRO series, 3M has one of the best paint protection films.

There are some great videos on line showing demostration of the benefits of the latest PRO series film. Very happy with it.

On any new car, I would recommend Clear Bra. And don't blame Nissan/Infiniti. The truth is that the industry has moved away from lead-based paints to water-based paints. And while water-based in environmentally friendly, it is much easier to chip.
