Bought a 2005 Xterra 4-wheel. Warrenty runs out this summer and I want to ensure all is Kosher with the rig. Everything seems alright ... except the smell. When stopping the car their is a very noticable sulfer smell. Dealership claims it is the gas and cold weather. Nothing to worry about. I'm only running Texaco gas, so it isn't the cheapo stuff. Do I believe these guys? Any advice (or similar experience) would help when I go back down to talk to these guys.

Second question: Looking to buy a small travel trailer. What weight will the rig tow without seriuosly stressing the motor? Also want something that I can bring up in the hills over some pretty nasty terrain. Any advice (models, etc.)

Any help is greatly appreciated.Eric

Welcome to NICO!!!

My understanding is that all gasoline contains some sulfer. Higher grades are supposed to be scrubbed better to remove it, but it's not always true. The newer vehicles have different compounds used in the catalytic converters.. some including nickel. The exhaust and unburned gas that travels through the converter reacts with the nickel and other materials and even though the emissions are cleaned up considerably, the sulfer smell is a common byproduct.

I would suggest trying another brand of gas until you find a mix that doesn't react in that way. If you are really determined, you could look into alternative exhaust parts..

I'm not sure of the exact towing capacity of the xterra.. but I would assume at least 3500 lbs. Could be as much as 5000 lbs. Either way, you'll have no trouble pulling a small trailer.. boats, even a car behind you should be just fine.

its most likely a cat problem... Note that sometimes you cna get a hardcore sulfur smell when the cats arent warmed up and theres a bunch of gas being dumped into them.

Example: I was driving my 05 Grand Prix GTP, started it up from cold, beat the tar out of it for about 10 mins and then turned it off. When i pulled into the garage it smelled really bad...
