Post

Hello everyone,

I just recently acquired a 1998 QX4 for $1500CAD from a close friend. It only has 85000km on it, and so far I've been really happy with my purchase. I am, however, trying to diagnose a couple of issues and trying to determine whether they require further attention and hope that the expertise on this forum can be of assistance.

Issue #1: Rear driver side window: my rear driver side window works fine if I use the master switch. However, it does not respond when using its own dedicated switch in the back. I would think that this seems to indicate that the rear switch is at faulty. What else should I look into before I purchase a switch? A local seller wants $25 bucks for the switch alone, is this a decent price?

Issue #2: I've noticed that sometimes there is a delay when I shift from say R to D. This isn't a long delay--something like 1-1.5 seconds or so--but it's enough that sometimes when I don't come to complete stop before i change gears, I get a "jump" when the gear finally catches. Is this normal for this vehicle? I've driven other cars (albeit newer cars) before and it seems to me that the gears on this car takes just a tad bit longer to engage. I've adjusted my driving to that I come to complete stop before I change gears and step on the gas, but I am wondering if this is a cause for concern. I've also noticed that it takes a bit longer to engage D when coming from R than say from P.

Issue #3: I've noticed a particularly hard shift from gears 1-2 and back down from 2-1. I've done some research and I believe the consensus is that the hard shift is normal and just inherent design "flaw".

Thanks very much in advance for your help, and I look forward to being a contributing member to the NICO community.

The transmission delay and rough shift is characteristic of our transmissions, nothing to worry about. However, you should check the transmission fluid level and condition; proper steps on doing so can be found in the general info thread linked in my signature.

Try swapping the left and right rear window switches to ensure it's the switch. :)

Another vote for swapping the rear switches to make sure it's actually the switch. Other culprits could be the master switch (I believe everything is routed through this) or the power regulator for the rear driver side window.

$25 sounds comparable to what you'll pay on courtesyparts. Not a bad price at all if it's new from a retailer.

I have tried switching the switches and I have confirmed that it is in fact the switch that is at fault. I found a local seller selling a used switch from a pathfinder. What was weird, though, was that when I installed said switch, the operation of the switch was reversed. That is, when I pressed the switch down the window went up, and the window does up when I press down. I didn't end up purchasing the switch because of this. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Electric-Po ... 70&vxp=mtr

Thanks for all your help so far.

Yes, that switch is intended for Hardbody pickups. If you want an exact OEM part number, provide your VIN and I can look it up for you.

Thanks for all your input and assistance. I purchased a switch from craigslist from a guy who was about to scrap his car for 15 bucks. The window works great now. I'm also thinking about replacing my factory unit with his, given that my cd player doesn't work. He said 30 bucks...is that a good price? By the way, our units are double din right? So if I get an aftermarket double din deck, it should fit right in?
