I have a diagram at work and I'll post it when I get there tomorrow, but I believe belt deflection is 0.3" for PS and 0.25" for the other two belts. This is with an applied force of 22lbs.Have you narrowed it down to the WP belt for sure? How many miles are on your J? BTW, did you do the timing belt while you were at it? That's a good time to do it when replacing the WP. Get us some more info and we can help you.Looks like you've made some other posts, but let me welcome you to NICO.

It could very well be a stuck idler pulley. The J & the early Q's have both had a problem with the idlers freezing up after time. Loosen the belt and try to spin it by hand, it should give you a good idea if the pulley is starting to go south.

where are you smelling gas from? In the cabin, exhaust? Follow your fuel lines and look for the smallest leak.

Your problem is likely very very simple. These engines are famous for being practically bulletproof. MAF sensor is the first place to start. Check the fuel line. Air filter. You get it. the basics. Trust me you own a great, reliable engine in a great car. Have you checked the engine codes? What year and mileage (klicks).

This is important for us to know: what year and how many klicks on your car? The exhaust will always smell rich when starting cold because combustion isn't occuring at optimum temperatures so there isn't complete burning of the fuel. This is normal.

Year and mileage, please. You could be making some expensive mistakes in your maintenance. We here on the site know these cars better than most of the techs that work on them.

The 93 J30 has the VG30DE Nissan engine. The timing belts on the 93 (and perhaps early 94) had to be changed at 60K miles (100K kms). The new belt would be the improved version good for 105K miles (160K kms). On later J's that came with the new kevlar belts, a 100K mile service has evolved that involves changing the timing belt as well as WATER PUMP, HOSES, BELTS, THERMOSTAT, IDLER PULLEY, CAM SEALS that can all be done at one time. Please do a search on "J30 timing belt" etc.

Parts can be had more cheaply (click on one of the ads here) and a good independent shop will give you better labour rates and better service. These are pretty well known Nissan engines that were (in different setups) used in 300ZX's, Pathfiders and J30's.

VimyJ,

I think you answered my questions?? Lets see? I bought a 1995 J30t and it was my father in laws the guy had every oil change and service done like clockwork. It is in mint condition. 90k miles exactly. I was referring to the manual and it sais, on the 105k service change the timimg belt etc. But others have said no at 60k or even now 90k change it? What is your opinion?

I am getting the regular 90k service done next week and am not in the budgeting mode to be able to pay for the unexpected 90k timing belt service. hoping to wait till at least 12+ months or 105k to do that. any ideas? Holla Back, thanks

OK, about the gasoline smell at startup and inside the cabin and engine compartment:

odds are that it is one of two things: fuel pressure regulator, or the fuel damper. both are mounted on top of the engine, very easy to replace both. there should be tests in the manual to determine which component is the culprit. also a good time to replace all your nearby rubber hoses- but make sure you use fuel hose rated for fuel injection systems (higher Pressure), which is different from normal fuel hose.

Less likely, but there could also be a leak somewhere in the fuel hose that connects to the fuel rail, or in the activated carbon cannister part of the fuel system.

Get some confidence for yourself. Remove the intake tubing to allow access to the timing belt cover, remove and try to inspect the belt for splitting and excess wear. This should be enought to feel comfortable. Remember that this engine is a zero tolerance engine. Meaning if the timing belt breaks valves and pistons will be damaged.

Great idea. I will do as advised.
