hows everyone? today I finally became an owner of these fantastic cars. I bought and drove it home and the power was exhilarating. Anyway, no used car is without its share of faults. My tcs and slip light is on and when I start the car, you can hear the mechanism under the hood making a lot of racket.

Also, my transmission is acting weird,I believe it to be electrical in nature. wont know until i get the service manual. what it does makes me think something is wire backwards. when you press the gas it up shifts. let off the gas it down shifts. like the opposite of what it suppose to do. coming from new Hampshire with the call was a bit unnerving. accelerate up to 80 or so and its getting up there but in a lower gear. as soon as you let up it down shifts into a higher gear effectively jerking you a bit. most of my ride back to md was at 3 to 4000 rpm. any idea as to why its doing that. other than that the transmission feels good.no noises or leaks and strong acceleration though it could be stronger if it was in the correct gear. I assume the tcs and slip light may be involved. like a limp home type of thing.those are the only issues i have with the car. car is clean and in mint condition. want to restore to reliable operation and then start modding for performance beginning with some type of ecu upgrade. my objective is to add a turbo once everything else is uprated to handle the extra power.

Just be sure you understand that EVERY 90-93Q45 we have seen for a paid prebuy inspection in the last 7 years has needed $4,000 to $11,000 in rehabilitation not including paint, body, or interiors.

The costs can be divided roughly 50-50 between parts and labor [at $85 per hour vs $125 dealer].

I keep my 90 on the road because I have $10,000+ in paid for parts and can get expert labour for $40 per saturday hour.

Plus I've spent 3,000+ hours over the past 10 years becoming expert on one specific car and year model.

Almost impossible to find good used low mileage junkyard parts or wreck repaired headlight assembly, transmissions, subframes, body panels as the wrecks have been picked over and destoyed by amatuers.

Perform the transmission self-check starting on page AT-40 of the FSM to see what fault codes are stored. Has the TRANSMISSION MALFUNCTION warning come on at start up?.

If you think it's electrical, get to the bundle of connectors at the aft end of the transmission and perform the electrical (ohm) checks outlined in the AT section for the revolution and turbine revolution sensors and the inhibitor switch. If any one of the 3 is not functioning the transmission will not shift properly.

Do what Mike said but remember if it stays on the "A/T-CHECK" check screen then look at the Throttle Position Sensor.

I must admit I do sometimes take my anger out on the cars in the junkyard.

Thanks a bunch! For all the replies. I do understand how the money can add up. All work will be done by myself. As for restoring, what I meant by that is mechanically. Getting everything running like it's suppose to. Which isn't much. Engine is tight, though I will be checking those gaurds and replacing with the revised ones if needed. Rides pretty good though suspension will demand most of my time. Right now the transmission situation has my full attention. I saw the fsm's but not one for the 90 or 91 model. So I bought one off eBay.Did you guys understand my explaination of the problem? The only warning lights or lights of any kind I have is the tcs and slip light showing and that after it goes through some sort of cycle upon starting the car. Any of those sensors you advised to check can cause that? I'll look into how to pull the the transmission codes or any codes for that matter. Realized this car came out before the obd2 hookups. Any help or literature to help with pulling them codes are appreciated. Thanks

Many things can trigger those TCS OFF and SLIP lights, Alternator, TCS relays (2 By the battery) THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR....

Do you hear the TCS throttle motor self check its self when turning the ignition on (It opens and closes real quick)?

So find yourself a Nissan Consult 1 or 2 and have them check the TCS codes. Or you can find some one with a dyno and see if you can use it, perform the test shown in the BR section of the service manual for the TCS.
