New Oil Drain option? I Hope!

Well today I went outside after recieving my turbo and turbo related things...lol...and I was thinking about how much I dont want to risks metal chips in the engine from drilling and tapping the oil return. So I look at my old KA-E and I have this crazy idea to use the oil dip stick tube as a return line. Here's my plan- to pull the dip stick tube and find a Y fitting to plug into the old hole- mark the new full level on the dipstick and use the other opening on the Y fitting as a drain for the turbo.... Please tell me that this will work...If this works this is my contribution to the fellow NICO'ers who've turned this forum into a "family"...lol...thanks -Jake

Nah, too small. Can't restrict flow of the oil away from the turbo. The drain line should be no smaller than 1/2". Bigger is better in this case.

Crap.... well I think the person who I bought my turbo from has one small dia. 3ft. stainless line coming from one of the oil "ports" on the turbo but If I installed the turbo like that then the drain would be facing upward. He also included a rather fat 1/2" line with fittings on it that srew into the squareish flang for the oil.. I hope that wasnt too confusing. Some one please point me in the right direction. thanks -Jake

WDRacing was hinting at another solution to drilling your oil pan, but i don't know if its an idea he wants to sell, or will share. either way, i am interested. hope he chimes in here

You mean drilling the block? All turbo Sentras do it.also drilling the panis not needed, you can tap it with a big tap and then just JB Weld/weld the fitting into the hole.

I also am waiting to see what WD has came up with. Is it really that big of a deal with the metal chips if you do what Sil80 suggested... I already planned on doing a oil "flush" just to make sure...

kapower, my buddy drilled his pan with it still on the car. he flushed a few quarts of crap oil through and JB welded the bung in, never had a problem with it.

Oil pan is not that hard to get off guys, just take off the front swaybar and pull it off. Do it right and you won't regret it.

IF anyone has a knockout punch set, they are really awesome. IF I were to do my oil pan again, I would probably use it.

Heres some advise, dont try to reinstall the oil pan with liquid gasket, it will hit everywhere while your trying to get it in and you will get frustrated and end up with an oil leak. Get a aftermarket oil pan gasket and its a million times easier.

LOL! yeah... liquid gasket is pain in the ***.I still did it but it got messy. I just like the seal of liquid better than solid, cuz it adapts to all the uneven spots. but you have to deal with the mess and the cleaning when you reinstall one, so maybe next time i'll use solid gasket.

Hmm never thought about that... Liquid gaskets are definitely annoying. where can I find aftermarket gaskets? Also, are they better than liquid gasket interms of preventing oil leaks?

i use a cork pan gasket provided by my machine shop.

we tapped my oil pan and are using a 7/8" return line.

I dont know if liquid gasket actually would make a better seal, but with all the possibliities of messsing it up I would say a real gasket is the way to go. I believe mine was a cork pan gasket aswell.

liquid gasket is what i used and now underneath my car is red.......literally. it isnt that bad once u clean it off and im with sil80, it adapts to the uneven surfaces (probably y nissan used it in the first place). Is it worth the mess, maybe. but if u can get cork gasket, y not give it a try?

BTW, i got a 1/2" fitting welded on the inside and outside of the pan.

I did cork gasket+RTV. Works like a charm. Don't over-torque the bolts though. It will cause the cork gasket to leak.

Where can I buy one of these gaskets? What customization do you have to do to them since I believe there are no "ka24 specific gaskets"?

My buddy used WAY too much RTV when he put the pan back on his TT 300z. He ended up with some bearing noise so he took it in and had a shop look at it. They ended up calling him down, and they showed him his oil pickup tube. As they turned it over, a whole bunch of RTV came falling out from where it had been blocking oil flow. He had gotten in a hurry and used the wrong size bearing, but this certainly didn't help the life of his engine any.

A small word of advice if you do use an RTV sealant. Wait at least overnight before starting the car. As a liquid, the RTV is not a great sealant. As it cures, it becomes a great sealant. While wet, it can develop leaks quite easily.
