I just bought an 85 nissan with a Z24 (S) motor. I have zero experience with these vehicles..... It runs but has some issues and I was wondering if I could get some advice on where to start.......

So, when i start it up cold i have to feather the gas to keep it running. After 10 min or so it will then start idling way high.....After driving around for awhile, when i turn it off it wants to keep running for a cpl secs......

Alot of the vac lines look rough but appear to be all there so today im gonna stop and get myself some vac lines and replace all of them.........assuming this does NOT fix my prob, where should i turn next.

Oh and one more thing. I have an Amber sensor dash light on, how do i manually pull codes from this truck.

thanks for any advice

What's do mean by (S) motor?

Guessing carb'd. Replace vac line 1 by 1 until there are no more, if you don't you will probably mess something up and have to decipher the multiple vac diagrams to get it back. They are different lengths and diameters depending on the line. Although it'd be a good Idea to read through the carb walkthrough in the stickies. Pretty sure the same guy did a vac walkthrough as well.

Could be the noid on the carb.

For my truck, the sensor light went off after I replaced a bad (leaking) oil pressure sensor on the engine. Other things might cause it too. How many miles on your truck?

The Odometer says 156,000 miles.....I thought maybe there was a way to make the light blink you a trouble code......

So yeah, ive read through the Carb, and Vac line tutorials, which are very informative. Lucky for me there hasnt been a hackjob on the emissions and vac lines........Will DEF replace one by one. I JUST bought the truck and on initial inspection there seems to be ALOT of inexpensive and relatively easy things i need to address before trying to diagnose and fix my idle issues......

My plan of attack is as follows
-replace ALL vacuum lines
-replace corroded wiring
-replace battery (i can hear it hissing after i turn the engine off lol)
-clean all terminal connections
-clean all grounds
-MAYBE start replacing sensors (O2) (engine coolant sensor)
go from there......

if your battery hisses or smells, its getting overcharged, figure out why, cuz exploding batteries are never a good thing.

Well, So far I have changed
-both Batt Cables (they were NASTY corroded)
-Batt
-Alt
-Belt
fixed everything in the charging system

Started to get a sluggish acceleration especially in the top of 3-5th gears........
-changed both fuel filters - problem fixed

Someone did a hackjob on some wires......l will post some pics to try to get help with that......

replaced about 75 % of vac lines.

installed new muffler and taiepipe ( they where gone completely

So, I still have the high idle.........im still suspecting vac leak.........

So, still need to feather gas lightly upon first start up........
High idle once warmed
slight dieseling when turned off

cpl observations
- If I goose the gas pedal and immediately let off the engine will rev up normally, and drop down to normal idle.......for a few seconds...then it will slowly creep back up to the high idle

-the other observation is that after i shut the engine down from running it awhile i can hear air hissing from the brake booster.......
i suspect that this may be my vac leak.......i wonder if i should apray starter fluid around the booster to see if the rpm's pick up....

My truck ran really poorly; fixed it by just removing all the vacuum lines and emissions equipment per the FAQ. Runs 100x better now. My idle was still high after that, ended up being the throttle cable was misadjusted. If the battery is still a problem, get a cheap digital multimeter and measure the voltage, should be right at or near 13.8 volts when running.

Dieseling could be carbon buildup (run a can of seafoam into the vacuum line to clean it out), poorly adjusted timing (needs to be timed something like every 20k miles or so, probably overdue), or just caused by the high idle.

Need to feather gas on startup: check the operation of your electric choke that it closes and opens properly without sticking or hanging up. Procedure is in the shop manual (like $10 on amazon.com if you need one)

Hope this helps.
