I usually wait until May / June to upgrade - Navteq does a $50 off special about that time. Aside from that, you can check on Ebay because people who upgraded to 2014 usually try to sell their preivious disc. If your car still has the 2005-2006 disc, you may be able to find a disc on Ebay which will be years newer than yours at a great price.
I won't be buying the 2014 update because I bought the 2013 disc last year. Depending on how often you use NAV and the sort of travel you do, it probably isn't necessary to upgrade every year. However, if your disc more than 3 years old, upgrading is a probably a good idea. I travel mostly on the major motorways and never find myself in rural areas so I upgrade every 2 years.

Thanks..the maps are about 5yrs old....so i'm needy.....I might just wait and try to find a 2013 set as you mention..i don't need the super latest/greatest.

I have the HDD 2009 so I had to have the dealer upgrade with the 2013 maps about a year ago. The point I want to make is that I called around to several dealers. One dealer was less expensive so I called my usual dealer and negotiated. Success, as they matched the better price.
