Hi my wife and I just bought a '64 N320 pickup and not familiar with column shifts

does anyone know the shift pattern?

also the handbrake lever is not attached to the rear brakes, cable might be broken or missing... is it a difficult job? can I use some parts off another car which is more common or newer?

I will post pictures tomorrow

Cheers

Beautiful little truck, as for the colum shift cant really help never have seen a Datsun. I used to have an old Ford van, and if I rember right it was just like a floor shift turned 90 deg, with 1st being up and aft, toward you. but your truck also has the steering wheel on the "wrong" side, so it may be oppeset.

There was a posting on another board about the 320 shift patterns...it was for the left hand drive versions and not the Aussie types...here is that posting:
HI,
The 62-64 320's came with the Column-shifted 4-speed.

The late 64's and 65's, and the few "66"-320's (hold overs, or late
arrivals) all had the floor shifted
4-speed, similar to the 410 4-speed, but different from the J-13 66 520
(late) 4 speed.
I have the laterJ-13 4-speed in my 66 520, but there is a specific VIN, that
before that VIN,
it has the same as the 320 4-speed. As for shift patterns...
> 1st is all the way forward and up,
> 2nd is all the way forward and down
> 3rd is all the way back and up,
> and 4th is all the way back and down

> reverse is a tricky little bugger...
pull the shift lever towards the passenger side of the truck, push it all
the way forward and
drop it down as if you were going into 2nd. It is a bit of a trick to get it
to shift correctly,
depending on how worn your linkages are.
Hope this helps, Garry k
I hope this helps you!

I also hope that helps since your shifter is on the opposite side of the column which is on the opposite side of the vehicle from ours and I don't know what effect that has on the shift pattern.

thanks for that I will try shifting it tomorrow

Anyone's got scanned workshop/service manual?

I need to adjust the handbrake as its not effective at all (useless)

thought cable is not connected but it is, might be the brake lining/shoe adjustment?

Also is it really hard to turn the steering wheels from parked?

I have a 1977 Datsun 1200 B120 ute and they are very light to steer i know they are way lighter than the N320 but my N320 feels tight, its my 1st :P

2nd: Hold pressure towards you then pull down

3rd: Up From second then push away from urself then up into third

4th: Straight down from third

Reverse: Push away from urself and down.

someone told me here in australia who owns a bluebird 410 pickup that his column shift pattern is push forward and up for 1st gear, push forward and down for 2nd gear, pull and up for 3rd, pull and down for 4th; reverse is pull the stick towards the passenger side and push forward and down.
