Hello everyone my name is Phil and I came across this forum while trying to find info on the G37X. I have always been a fan of sports cars I have owned several Mustangs, a 3000GT, and a Celica. I have always liked the G series coupes but what has really turned me on to them is now they are available with AWD unlike the first gen g35 coupes. What I would like to ask from the knowledgeable community is what should I look for while buying one of these. Is there a model year to avoid? common problems to look for? I'm mostly wanting the AWD model because i'm sick of having to drive a RWD car in a New England winter. Do the AWD models have horrible MPGs compared to the RWD? I know the EPA rating is only 1 less MPG but in real world driving does it actually come out that way? Also what are some of the differences between the different model years?

I'm looking to spend around 25-30k in the next year or so. I have seen some in the classifieds around that range so I'm going to try to get the lowest mile car in that price range.

IMO there are no real years to steer clear of as the G's are all pretty solid vehicles. There are some changes throughout the model years you could look at via:

Are the fog lights only on certain models or for newer model years? The couple I have checked out so far have not had fogs, infinity's website shows them with fogs. I know its a minor detail but just curious...

The older G37's which do not have fog lights in the lower nose have them inside the headlight housings. In 2011 they started offering the fogs moved back to the lower sections of the nose.

From the 2008 G37 coupe review:
"Exterior highlights include flowing front fender curves, a wave-style hood, expressive front fascia with Infiniti’s signature double-arch grille and L-shaped High-Intensity Discharge (HID) bi-xenon headlights with integrated fog lamps."

FWIW, the standard headlights throw out a good amount of light. I'm not sure foglights will make all that much of a difference. Of course you could always add some Cibie mirror melters later if you think the standard lights feel insufficient.

I suspect you'd see a couple mpg penalty for the AWD version as opposed to RWD, but it's certainly not a mileage killer. As mentioned by someone earlier, there are no bad years for the G's, they are comfortable, well made cars. The only downside I see to them, which is pretty minor, is that they run on premium gas.
Enjoy.

I didn't realize that the older cars had them built in to the headlight, I personally just like the look of the lower fogs but not a big deal. I'm still deciding when i'm going to pull the trigger on one but I'm a little bit disappointed that the current gen car may be in production as late as 2014 if the autoblog article is correct. I have always preferred to buy one of the last model years of a generation of a car to work out the kinks and usually lower prices. Since everyone here suggest that all models are fairly reliable so maybe i'll buy an earlier car w/ the 7 speed auto.

oh one more noob question is the 370Z available in AWD?

The 370Z is not available in AWD. Sometimes I wonder why they haven't offered it as an option though, considering it being an option for the G.

Yeah I would defiantly have considered one if they did, at the same time the G is probably the better overall car for me. In my opinion it is better looking, has a small but usable backseat, AWD and seems to be tuned for to the luxury side of things.
