I have always been a fan of sports cars I have owned several Mustangs, a 3000GT, and a Celica. I have always liked the G series coupes but what has really turned me on to them is now they are available with AWD unlike the first gen g35 coupes. What I would like to ask from the knowledgeable community is what should I look for while buying one of these. Is there a model year to avoid? common problems to look for? I'm mostly wanting the AWD model because i'm sick of having to drive a RWD car in a New England winter. Do the AWD models have horrible MPGs compared to the RWD? I know the EPA rating is only 1 less MPG but in real world driving does it actually come out that way? Also what are some of the differences between the different model years?
I'm looking to spend around 25-30k in the next year or so. I have seen some in the classifieds around that range so I'm going to try to get the lowest mile car in that price range.
FWIW, the standard headlights throw out a good amount of light. I'm not sure foglights will make all that much of a difference. Of course you could always add some Cibie mirror melters later if you think the standard lights feel insufficient.
I suspect you'd see a couple mpg penalty for the AWD version as opposed to RWD, but it's certainly not a mileage killer. As mentioned by someone earlier, there are no bad years for the G's, they are comfortable, well made cars. The only downside I see to them, which is pretty minor, is that they run on premium gas.
Enjoy.
