It all started when I found this 72' 240Z on craigslist. And as luck would have it I was flat broke. But the car was less than 1 mile from my house, so I figured Ill go look at it. Why not right? Turned out the guy selling it was cool as hell. We hit it off right away, I told him that at that moment I didnt have any money to put down on the car and that id get back to him if I could come up with something. His reply was that " I will take the ad down, I know you will be back. I can see how badly you want this car"
I was stunned, I didnt know what to say. I shook his hand and thanked him over and over again.

Well after 4 days of doing non stop side jobs before and after work and selling a beater motorcycle I had the money for the car!

I was a bit over joyed haha

The next couple of weekends basically just consisted of my going over every inch of the rust to see how bad it really was... After stripping the interior I came to realize I didnt have much of a car left....

Not to mention it was going to need engine bay rails, battery tray, about half of the fire wall...I decided it was time to find another chassis.

Back to craigslist I go to find a cheap donor. I came across this 77' 280Z. The price was right, and it had floors... anything else I could swap from the 240Z and make a running car..

So the front sheet metal was junk, it didnt run, had no brakes, but I knew I could make a bad a** car between the 2.

After about 4 weeks time this is where im at..
removed all the fuel injection
rebuilt and converted to SU carbs from the 240
installed a 6/2/1 header that came with the 280z
swapped all the front sheet metal from the 240
240Z tail lights
240Z bumpers ( I know they are very beat and bent and rusty but its legal)
rebuilt the brakes
fixed some non working gauges
fixed the factory clock! ( other datsun owners will understand)
all the lights, signals, ect all now work properly, that took forever
newer headunit

Thats where Im basically at. The car runs and drives great. Its now my daily driver. I have put about 300 trouble free miles on the car in the past 2 weeks.
It gets compliments anywhere it goes...

Im ecstatic that im actually driving a Z for a change, and its not on jackstands like every other Z ive owned

I will have some more current pictures later on once Im home. I have since mounted the fender flares, and sprayed it a gloss black as a temp solution till winter when I tear it down for proper body work and paint.

Believe it or not, this is my 17th Z car! I can never seem to hang on to them lol. Now that 17 is including everything from 240Z-300ZX-G35 coupe. I clearly have a problem haha. But in my eyes, nothing else drives like a Z.

The good news is that this car is not going anywhere. The woman in my life has laid down the law. haha

Funny how when momma puts the foot down we kind of snap out of it. LOL

17 Zs! That is fun. Do your best to hang onto this one for sure! I agree about the way a Z drives. I thoroughly enjoy mine and it scratches my car itch in a way many other things on the road cannot.

My future wife has laid down the law. She has been with me for all of my Z projects. She has watched all of them transform from rust piles to semi greatness lol. But now shes wanting a house and all that goes along with it. So its either I keep this Z or dont have one. And im sorry but I have not been with out a Z for close to 6 years. So thats not an option!!

as for future mods and such. I have no idea. I know I want to completely do all the suspension, body work, interior, paint. But as for power/ engine choice, im totally undecided. I have a line on a low mileage KADE swap, or just boost the L28, maybe even a RB20 swap...

Who knows what Ill do haha

well after some extensive research, I think I have decided on a power plant. The RB20DET. I know its a little smaller then the current L28E, or smaller than a KA24DE. But after looking up mounts and drive shafts, radiators, ect... The RB20 really appears to be a very simple swap.

You can use the factory mounts from the RB to the S30 front crossmember.
You can use either the S30 or RB20 trans crossmember.
The 280Z drive shaft fits with out shorting or lengthening.
The wiring from what Ive read is super simple.

The only real obstacle to over come is the front sump oil pan.
I have found a few solutions, But in the end I may just fab one up on my own.

So thats basically where I am at. Now to order a motor set!

Boo, L28ET FTW, not that I'm biased, but I'm biased ;) There is no replacement for displacement. A little clarification, the rb trans mount might work but I assure you the crossmember will not. The RB engine mount will work but the engine is kinda high and forward, the aftermarket kits move the engine down and back a bit, which would also mean shortening the drive shaft but yes the yoke on the s30 4 speed,s 5 speeds, and everything but the T5's and z32's is the same.

id love to do a L28et again. my 80' 280zx that i built a few years ago was a monster. If I was to come across a parts car for a good price then I would scrap the RB idea. My real concern is newer EFI for better and more accurate fuel mileage/ fuel delivery. I am sick and tired of messing with these damn carbs and its not even cold yet!

now I want to look for a parts car.. thanks Evildky

lol, Megasquirt fixes all your management woes ;) Actually a lof of people swap the later z31 efi systems onto the l28's they work well stock and open the door to nistune or similar romulators. I'm not a fan of the afm, and I like the simplicity of a map based system. I recently got rid of my gen 3 3sgte swapped swapped aw11 mr2, you know toyota kept the stupid afm til 94! They added a map in 90 but it was just for triggering safety boost, nissan electronic's make much more sense and play better with aftermarket ecu's. Also the 3sgte is a horribly packaged motor, as bad as the vg30dett and vh45de.

A built L28ET would be my choice as well (after building an RB-powered Z).
