This whole generation/series of coupes is referred to as the "Skyline" series in Japan and goes back many years.
To all posters/readers:If I've gotten any of the above wrong, please correct me, I'm somewhat of a newbie myself and I've just learned all of this recently.
1) S13's were sold in the US (as the 240sx) from 89-94, in japan they were sold as convertible silvias in 1989, and as coupes (silvias) from 1988-1994, and as hatches (180sx) from 1988-1998. S13's with pop up headlights can further be broken down into zenki and kouki models ("pignose" and "sharknose," referring to the nostrils in the hood of the 89-90 sohc ka in the states or the 88-90 ca18 models in japan land or the sleek front ends on all other pop up headlight cars). All silvias had fixed headlights. All japanese car sold after the '90 model year had the SR20, in NA or turbo variants. in europe S13's were sold from '90-'94 I believe, all with ca18det's, all hatches, and called the 200sx.
2) S14's were sold in the US as the 240sx from 95-98, and in japan from the same model years. They all had SR20's in japan, all ka24de's in the US. The rounded headlights on the 95 and 96 model years are zenki, the kouki's for 97-98 switched to the more aggressive front end using slanted headlights.
3) S15's were sold in japan only from Jan 99 - Aug 2002 and all had the sr20 motor, available in spec S and spec R variants (R had the 6 speed plus helical lsd) as well as the famous autech tuned 6 speed sr20de screamer, and were also available in the "varietta," a limited production s15 convertible.
4) skylines were a completely different model produced by nissan during approximately the same time period, BNR32's during the S13, BNR33's during the S14, and BNR34's during the S15's time. They all used 6 cylinder engines (rb20's in non GTR R32s, RB25's in R33 and R34 non GTRS, althought towards the end of the 32's and start of the 33's some rare cars may have had either) and all GTR's used the famous RB26DETT twin turbo 2.6 liter inline six cylinder motor.
as for the little LE etc monikors:
LE stands for limited edition. All convertibles were limited edition, as indicated by the strips up the side on the 1/4 panels, production was limited to approximately 20,000 copies.
SE stands for sports edition. SE cars came with 205 tires instead of 195 tires, a front lip spoiler, and some came with leather wrapped shift knobs and other little details.
XE is base model I believe. This really doesn't mean that much since you could add most options to any edition.
some cars are marked HICAS, its a hydraulic rear wheel steering system. All hicas cars had ABS and viscous limited slip differentials. hicas was available from 91-94 and I've only seen it on hatchbacks, I know it wasn't available on convertibles and I'm pretty sure it wasn't available on coupes.
all thats from my memories except the build date of the S15, which I had to look up, so feel free to correct.
