New member - 1998 QX4 - and one question

Hi!

I just purchased a 1998 QX4 for a trip to Baja over Thanksgiving. The truck is really clean (no rust, San Francisco) and all original down to the gold color. We will be driving all the way to Cabos San Lucas and bringing it back in January.

We don't intend to do any modification at all on it - just drive and enjoy. One Owner, all receipts, 166K miles, new tires, radiator, etc. Only thing I had to replace is the struts for the rear hatch glass.

I have one question. I checked the 4x4 and it works fine. When I turn the know to auto or lock, I have the 4 green lights. I also tested it nearby in the dirt.

However, I noticed that there is also a yellow "4WD" light in the cluster on the left that illuminates when I start the truck. Is this one also supposed to turn on? I did not get the user manual with the car.

The 4WD light on the dash is a 4WD warning light. I don't know exactly what it warns about but mine occasionally comes on after using the 4wd system but will go away when I cycle the 4wd on and off a few times.

Do you get the 4 green lights for the wheels plus the orange one in the middle with a lock light illuminated?

Does it stay lit, or does it go out shortly after starting?

The light goes out right away when the truck starts. I have not had it on when it was in 4wd.

I wonder what kind of warning that would be?

If the light goes out right away when you start the truck, that should be normal. If it stays on there is a problem.

Yours may be different, but on my 2002, the centre orange light comes on when I put it in 4WD low.
In normal 4WD or Auto, only the four green lights are on.

On my 2001, all 4 green lights come on when I put it in Auto, the center orange comes on for 4Hi, along with a "lock" light. And then I think there is a 4Lo Light as well but its been awhile since I used it. I would assume it should be the same for both of ours.
