I just bought a 2007 Maxima SL. It runs fine except that it pulls to the right under acceleration. The more acceleration, the worse it pulls. At constant speed, it is perfectly neutral. Has anyone had this problem? Any advice short of taking it back?

This is called torque steer, my friend. Welcome to FWD! :D You'll get used to it pretty quick. You just have to hold on to that steering wheel when mashing the gas.

Yeah, I've been driving a FWD V-6 for years, and before that, FWD V-8's with tons of torque, but I've never experienced anything like this. Is the Maxima much worse than other cars?

the vq engine is probably putting out more actual power to the tires than any of those cars that you've driven before (depending obviously on what they were).

hence -- torque steer. the engine is very powerful, sitting tranverse, and putting power to the wheels that steer -- what do you expect?

What do I expect? Perfection, of course!!

I was just trying to find out if this much torque steering was normal on the Maxima. I guess it is. If I can't learn to live with it, I'll get something else.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm not sure how much is normal as I don't own a maxima of a comparable year (see sig)

I do however know that its probably normal... I had a 1993 Max (which has significantly less power than yours) and it had torque steer.

The 07 Altima 3.5 has addressed the torque steer; I can only hope that the enhacements will be transferred to the Maxima.

Hmmmmm.... Thanks a bunch! I may have to trade for an Altima. I just got the Maxima because it fit my butt better. I didn't notice the torque steer during test drives. I was afraid to scare the salesman by driving like I usually do.

To tell you the truth, I really don't think it's THAT bad on the maxima. Maybe go into the dealer and ask if you can drive a maxima on the lot to see if it's the same. If not, then maybe something is wrong with yours. The new alti has equal length half shafts and a lowered powertrain to help combat the torque steer and it really helped. I hardly noticed any at all when I test drove the 3.5 6-speed.

I spent some time yesterday annoying the dealer. I test drove another Maxima and an Altima - hard. The Maximas have torque steer, the Altimas do not. I annoyed the Sales Manager (my son, incidentally) enough that he checked on it. He said that Nissan was aware of the problem and had fixed it in this year's Altima and will fix it in next year's Maxima.

Since I really like the ride and feel of the Maxima, I'm going to try to get used to the torque steer. If it still bothers me this summer, he said he'd give me a sweet deal on a trade in on a 2008.

Thanks again for the help and info. It's always interesting when you know more about their cars than the dealer.

Well my 02 has always done it but you get used to it or I guess yea you get rid of it but that would suck depending on what you buy. I love my max and will keep it for quite a while once I can get my STI and my wife to learn how to drive the manual transmission I love so much, lol
