Yesterday I was returning from dinner out,and as I am leaving the parking lot the car stalls out, restart and 60 sconds later idle fluctuates and stalls again- restart and car performs like brand new on the 40 mile highway trip home. Today I start car and head off,car running perfect for 15-20 minutes then slight bucking feeling for 10-15 seconds at highway speed then perfect again- parked for a few hours and started and ran perfectly for trip home until last 1/2 mile it starts bucking/fluctuating idle-check engine lamp illuminates for first time.

Get out code reader{my Q is a 96 OBD2} get code p0100{MAF}Check connector /pins all look like new, tight connection.I cleaned MAF a few months ago, so it is clean-

Here is the big question!!! Should I just bite the bullit and order new MAF from Joe assuming that will cure it, or take to dealer, pay the $125 diagnostic and hope they can re-create the problem while it is there to confirm it is definitly the MAF that needs replacing????

I thought abut buying used, but considering the used part is as old or older than the one currently on my car, it didnt seem like a long term trouble free option-plus I need my car operating tomorrow{no need to rent a car for a week and pay that expense} waiting for a questionable used part to arrive

Yeah, you probably did the correct thing.

Definitely check out the old one and save it until you confirm the cause.

MAF arrived by Fedex at high noon..installed and went for a 1 hour drive and problem solved!

Just for kicks I called local Infiniti dealer, they quoted $125 labor and $946 for MAF.....total part/labor/Md tax would have been $$$ 1128.29 including the carwash!

Without Joe, an expensive repair becomes an uber-expensive repair

So, when is someone going to figure out a way to repair/rebuild the MAF?

What parts/pieces cause the failure?

I read about a place that you can send yours to for about $150 that will rebuild/solder yours-

I will take my old one apart to determine what caused the failure, then maybe get it professionally repaired and offer it for sale here if anyone is interested in a $200 rebuilt MAF???

I think after you razor knife the cap off you will see the problem. Use a loupe or higher mag & all will be revealed. I re-soldered mine 30k ago. No issues so far. Took me all of a hour & a 1/2. Very easy to do. Even if you have none of the necessities it will cost you no more than $40.00. A lighted mag glass is a nice touch if your eyes are past 40 yrs.

A proper desoldering tool and 25 watt solder iron with average and tiny tips and eutectic lead/tin 60/40 electronic solder with proper rosin all at radio shack.

Yea but according to Wes Qisguy does the ECU's because Wes is uber busy.

And either Wes or the guy that repairs Bose speaker could do it. I think its StarPD or something.
