New Keyless remote/Fob, old SECU

Hey I have an early 2001 QX4 (before 07/00) with the round style remotes. I read online that the new style (2002-2004) of remotes would program to a 2001, so I ordered 2 cheap ones. Then after some research when they didn't work, I found out that with an early 2001 the remotes are "A" (2w611) instead of "01A" (2w612) and that many of the round style ones are prone to failure, Not to mention they're harder to find and much more expensive than the new style. I'm wondering if I would be able to switch the "smart entry control unit" or a module/relay with a late 2001 or newer one to make the newer style remotes (01A) work, or if the wiring/plugs etc is just too different. Has anyone done this? And if so do any other models use the same style SECU that would work? (sentra, xterra, etc) or should I just buy the older style remote.

Looks like they have a different plug, but can't really tell. anyone know where its located under dash? Drivers or passenger's side
