I bought a used 2008 Rogue that only came with one key. I bought an uncut key from a website and had it cut. It fits the ignition and turns, it just won't start. I was able to get the fob portion to work with the instructions provided by the website. Is there a way to get the key to work the ignition without paying a dealership $90 to do a 5 minute procedure?

The new key you had made won't start the car? Sounds like either the guy that made the key fudged up, or the blank you bought wasn't the correct one. You may have to bite the bullet and cough up the money for the dealership to make you a working one.

If the key turns, the engine starta but it doesnt run, then he copied the original key properly, right?

So when you open the new key fob, can you see a small black piece, with small letters and numbers on it? It is the immobilzer chip.

I remember there was a procedure to program the empty immobilzer chip somewhere...by inserting the black key and turning the key couple of times etc.

The website said the key would need to be programmed by a dealership or locksmith in order to start the car. I just was curious if there was a trick I can use to avoid spending the money.

That's what I did to get the new fob to lock and unlock the doors, but it doesn't work for starting the car.

I found this answer on another forum. It seems to fall in line with the explanation the dealer gave me. He mentioned something about going on to Nissan's internal website and getting a code:

"ONLY dealer's can register keys. It requires submitting a pin number from your body control module to nissan corperate to get a nissan anti theft code. Even then it requires a consult II or III scan tool to register the key. And I have seen it done, don't know how but people have bypassed the security system. But the system is hardwired into your engine control module and your body control module."

So it looks like it's off to the dealership for me.
