For people that don't understand why NJ drivers drive the way they do, here are some rules that should clear up any misconceptions. (I grew up in northern NJ)

1. Turn signals will give away your next move. A confident NJ driver avoids using them

2. Under no circumstances should you maintain a safe distancebetween you and the car in front of you. because the space will be filled in by somebody else putting you in a more dangerous situation than before.

3. Never get in the way of an older car that needs extensivebody work, the other operator has nothing to lose.

4. Never pass on the left when you can pass on the right. It;s a good way to prepare other drivers entering the highway

5. Speed limits are arbitrary figures, given only as a suggestionand are not enforceable in NJ during rush hour especially on the NJ Turnpike

6. always brake and rubberneck when you see an accident, or even someone changing a tire. This is seen as a sign of respectfor the victim

7. Learn to swerve abruptly without signalling. NJ is home tohigh speed slalom driving , thanks to the DOT, who puts potholesin key locations to test drivers' reflexes and to keep them alert.

8. It is tradition in NJ to honk your horn at cars in front of youthat do not move 3 milliseconds after the light turns green.

9. Remember the goal of every NJ driver is to get ahead of thepack by whatever means necessary

10. In NJ, "flipping the bird" is considered a polite salute.

I'm sure we could come up with more.....

I saw a cool bumper sticker in Boston on the Tobin Bridge a couple years ago. It said "Welcome to Boston, don't get upset just drive like we do" Sorry I don't want to jack your thread just thought you could use that for your "Rules of NJ"

Pretty much Midwest drivers should not drive on the east coast. They will get run the **** down. I remember last August heading out to Cape Cod on 1A or something doing 90 at night and being passed up by Full Size Trucks.

Actually the craziest drivers I've ever seen are in Boston. (I have lotsa family up there). For example, in NJ no one uses turn signals but in Boston, they use the opposite signal to fake the other drivers out.

Aye, Boston has the worst drivers. It's like the 24 hr. of LeMans every day up there.

Yet another reason I will never live in the North East... besides the 10,000 other reasons.

Actually, the craziest drivers (albeit, not in the US) are in Tijuana. I swear, the taxi drivers are just begging to die or something! :)They all drive these crappy old station wagons and fly over curbs, across sidewalks, through red lights, and over small objects (boxes, trash cans, one kids bike, etc). It was incredibly scary driving around down there with them...

Some people look at "clover leafs" and "jug handles" (terms for those weird left turns by turning right) as annoying, but to enthusiasts, they are opportunities to test the limits of tire grip. It;s all a matter of perspective

Gotta remember, NJ is the most densely populated state in the country. Millions of people crammed into a small area. You stick a red light in a high density traffic area and watch how huge the backup would be. Clover lLeaf lets the traffic flow continously.

I actually find city driving far more entertaining than highway.

Wide jug handles, late at night with nobody around, can be nice drifting test tracks...

not that I would know, of course. ;)

craziest drivers ive seen were in the dominican republic. they were insane! we were in a bus going to the resort and cars were flying by us on a small crappy two lane road on blind turns. not to mention we were prolly doing 20mph over (if they have speed limits down there)

I heard that in taiwan, taxi drivers swerve in and out of traffic run red lights like no tomorrow but they are very cautious when pass through solid green lights. ;)
