It's gorgeous. I love the nose, and the headlights. I love the vertically-oriented tail-lights. The XJL has always looked long, and this one does, too. My favorite part of it, though, is that the XJR, along with the XF, are the first Jaguars in a long time with the rear axle in the right place. Most recent Jaguars (previous XJs, S-type, X-type) have had rear overhangs big enough to shelter a small family. Not anymore. Those rear tires are back at the corner where they should be.
I wish the rear deck was level, though. I've never liked droopy decklids, regardless of the roofline they're transitioning from. I think a level deck would sharpen up the car's proportions significantly, but in a subtle way that most people wouldn't even notice.
The Jaguar AJ V8 is also magnificent. Silky, silky smooth, it makes nearly every other piston engine on the planet feel crude. It sounds amazing, even if Jaguar tends to over-muffle it. Its torque curve makes most of its DOHC compatriots cry themselves to sleep. And the latest iteration makes impressive power and torque for its size.

Please don't hold the X-type against Jaguar. It's not a Jaguar, it's a Contour. It's a Ford econocar platform with Ford engines. There's not an ounce of Jaguar in its blood.
As far as being able to afford to keep Jaguars on the road...mine has been just as affordable as any car I've ever owned.
