I have a 1993 J30 in pretty good shape. Bought it with 103K for approx $2,700. So far so good. The previous owner had all maint done by the dealer and left the records. I would like to know how often the following items should be replaced on these cars: 1- timing belt, 2- spark plugs. I would also like to know what is involved in routine tune-ups for this car. I have begun to notice a clicking sound coming from the rear suspension on take-off and at some stops. I have heard that it is normal for these cars.

Any info or help on any of these issues or any that you feel I should know would be appreciated.

JOE

Actually if the belt is original then the first time should be 60k

Welcome to Nico!!!

Use only OEM sparkplugs. Anything else screws the engine up.

94 is when they started using the Kevlar belt.

Yes you are correct that is the interval for a 93 with original belt. Try to get the kevlar one if you change it.

Also get the NGK spark plugs from Joe.

I was looking around the engine today and found a dealer sticker that the timing belt had been replaced at 55K in 1999 by INfinity. Would they have installed the kevlar or regular belt in 1999? Is there any way to know?

Also any ideas on the rear suspension noise?

Thanx for the help

JOE

Contact the dealership that did the service and they will tell you.

All replacement belts were/are the improved Kevlar type. However, 100k is the time to replace hoses, belts, water pump, tensioner pulley and thermostat. Perhaps some of these preventitve maintenance measures were performed when the original timing belt was replaced. Check your records.

I can only guess what dealer I need to contact by using the carfax inspection records .Most of the inspections were done near the closest Infiniti dealership "Grubbs Infiniti"I called them and they said I had to bring the J in to verify the Vin.Hope I dont get a "Its gonna cost ya" line .

The J is a premium car and you have to expect to pay to play. However, once the maint. is done you are home free (barring transmission failure or accidents (I'm knocking wood right now)) for 100k miles.

Change the transmission filter ASAP. This is very, very important. The J has a good transmission IF you take care of it. What an owner must to bear in mind is that the J is heavy. The transmission works hard so an unimpeded flow of clean - hopefully synthetic - fluid doing its job and returning a good flow to the radiator to effienctly lose heat is key.

Maintenance costs money but the J30 is unique in the car world, IMHO. It is well engineered and well built. No modern paints can compare to the quality of the oil based paint used on the Js. One of the things that amazes me is how "new" my car looks after 10 years.

That's utter crap.

Avoid that dealership like the plague.

Call any of our sponsor dealerships (Midway, Pinnacle, Scottsdale, Westbury).
