I don't think changing ignition timing requires a change in octane rating because your compression ratio is still the same... Maybe even less since the piston has 2 degrees worth of time LESS to compress the a/f mixture (obviously, this is on a very MINUTE scale... no need to get all worried). Thus, the pinging in this case would be caused by simply premature detonation and not by the compression ratio igniting the mixture through heat, no?
!Someone correct me if I'm wrong! I LOVE (yes, I've tried it before) the idea of getting to use premium fuel, so don't mistake me for trying to point out the economical view. And if you're worried about premium having more detergent (hence "better"), imagine a high-octane tank and a low-octane tank at the gas station; you're simply getting a blend and that four octane difference will not yield a significant greater amount of better detergent from the high octane tank.
