New Infiniti EX35 Nav unit

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

This week I'm sampling the 2010 Infiniti EX35 sport crossover. A few things I didn't notice from when I first drove the car: ABS plastic fender flarings on all four corners that blend into the inner liners and keep the mud (and scratches?) down. Higher CG really affects sustained cornering loads, but transient response from side-to-side remains good for a crossover. VQ35HR tuned for low end torque (297 hp/253 tq), but the VQ37VHR will be a better overall performer whenever Infiniti decides to upgrade North American powertrains for that model line.

The interior of the EX remains very well turned out and the upgraded Nav system is notable. All of Infiniti/Nissan nav units have been upgraded for 2010 and offer greater legibility and function. In particular, weather updates are tied into the XM functions and offer both audio and visual alerts when a winter storm, for example, comes in. The 7" touch screen is in beautiful color and offers green dots to show businesses (restaurants, banks, etc) as well as icons for hotels and gas stations. THAT could be very helpful when traveling!

I also liked several other EX technical features, like preview lighting and round-view monitor (which uses cameras located around the car to alert the driver to possible contact when parking or backing).

Yeah, the upgrades that Infiniti have added to the 2010 electronics is nice. I liked the EX's I've driven with the one major negative being the limited cargo space in the back for "grocery hopping". I seemed to be able to stash more stuff in my G37 coupe for some reason.

A few months into the new navigation software we are starting to notice more third party software verification issues. Devices like ipod, and iphones have various complaints since they updated to ios4 but that is not really an Infiniti issue.

What this highlights (to me at least) is the true nature of the future of my profession and what the consumer complaints of the future will be more third party software related issues than mechanical breakdowns.

New owners are reporting pros and cons listed for just about all functions, but that is like any new device (expect for anything made by Apple of course) there are issues with the first batch. Infiniti has been very pro active about staying on top of many of the reported software glitches, there has been a pending recall for a software update on almost all 2010 models that repairs many of the issues.

Apple has however altered their security verification protocals with the OS update so that may require something a little different. Owners of older Ms and other models that are using add on ipod interfaces are required to purchase a piggyback device to operate correctly.

In most phones (like my BB) and devices that support Bluetooth streaming media profiles the integration is very simple and the switchover to call protocols is flawless.
