Just got back from an informal tour of the new Infiniti dealer here in Elk Grove. Took me through the shop, met some of the techs, parts manager, service manager, and too many salesmen! Looks like a great set-up. He quoted me $105 for a Consult and TPS/idle adjustment based upon 1 hour. Does this sound about right for diagnostics? Ever since I did the plenum work I've had some sporadic idle/shifting issues. I just can't seem to get it set perfectly with the TPS voltmeter method. I remember Dennis saying how critical the interaction between TPS and IAC was and how a consult was the best way to do it right. Any thoughts anyone?

Ive had many idle problems... And maybe I could learn some things as well...

Maybe you could expound on 1) the TPS voltometer thingy you mentioned (my idle is about as good as its gonna get with old motor mounts), 2) the actual problem you had.

You did the plenum work yourself? Did you use my writeup??? :D

Wes,I did my plenum last June before your great write-up. I remember you asking a few questions to use in your future torture. Here was the link:

About the idle problems. I had stupidly loosened the TPS when taking off the throttle body. The TPS is very, very sensitive to position. The car often will idle higher after a good cleaning of the plenum, runners, etc. Mix that in with a TPS that is slightly off and the idle suffers. The TPS signals changes in the TCU resulting in quirky shifting. Dennis provided valueable input as always but it only got me very close. I think a Consult would be the way to go. The link for the idle issue is:

Oh yes I remember now. I was wondering why the TPS would need adjusting.

$105 seems a little steep IMO. A nissan dealer would be just as good IMO as they have the same consult tool, and its old school in their book so you should be just fine going there. Plus its probably only like $70....

I will never forget seeing the post by dennis that said NEVER ADJUST THE TPS WITHOUT A CONSULT.

Why would you take a 13 year old Infiniti do a dealer for service?Just take it to Valvoline for the few oil changes it has left.

Not even sure dealer techs are that familiar with the EXACT way the TPS voltage ges divided into 10 steps......the exact ideal breakpoints.

Many designs use a idle switch to overide or supplement the data [makes the exact TPS voltage less critical at idle].

Remember the "hot wax/spring" warm up idle cam actually opens the throttle plate and thus moves the TPS..........why it is critical that the coolant be hot [176F] for 5 minutes before the TPS potentiometer is adjusted.

The system worked flawlessly when new and can work that way till junked........with periodic cleaning of the ENTIRE induction system.

The transmission graphs in FSM show shift points [speed] vs throttle opening % [ as it is interpreted by the tcu from the TPS voltage].

I won't touch that one guys! Although I do use a Valvoline shop when I change the blinker fluid and rotate my calipers.

Thanks as always Dennis. Are there any specific questions I should ask the tech to make sure he's proficient with this TPS adjustment procedure? Like I said above the DVM method got me close but I know it needs the final Consult method.

Is this same TPS setup used on any other Nissans? If so, I doubt if they charge any less than Infiniti but I might find a more experienced tech.

Nissan dealers DO charge less.... TRUST ME.

I think its all the same setups, or close enough....

BE SURE YOU GIVE THEM YOUR SERVICE MANUAL. They most likely wont have one!!

I always take my trumped up Maxima to Valvoline. Why Not?I still got 2 more years of bumper to bumper warranty on my trumped up Maxima from Infiniti. I only take it to the dealer for warranty work. If it was 13 years old it would be in my back yard as a museum with my DC-3 and F4 Phantom. By the way...no torque steer on an I30.....only 190HP..torque steer starts on a Ford Taurus SHO V8. Do you know what that is?

Good news. I wondered when they were going to open. I was at the Acura dealer across the street about a month ago, and it looked like they were nearly finished with it.

Yes I know, I have driven the G35 as a loaner. A wonderful car.The shift points are ambiguous. They only let me have the 4 door as the loaner...my favorite is the 2 door but never got to drive it yet.

My 13-year-old car most likely has less miles on the engine than yours does. And Dennis, aka Q45Tech, has almost 260,000 miles on his 90Q and it is still mechanically solid.

Cool! Sounds like a great car. I was only wondering why you take it to the dealer for service. Do you think that is best for our older cars? Oh by the way driving a glorified Maxima is a compiment you know.......I would like to have a 2004...so why would you insult me because I drive a glorified Maxima? May be my next car........you can insult me again next year. Why do you hate Maximas anyway?

Your Pal,

Scott

Scott.

The I's are great cars, nothing wrong with Maxima's, but the I's enjoy some extra attention during assembly, as well as japan only assembly. Why do you talk down your own car?If you dont like it sell it on NICO classifieds to a deserving enthusiast.

As for the SHO, like tru car enthusiasts we all know what they are, and that the recent ones have a small V8 and the early ones a Yamaha V6.

Also the SHO V8's, have had terrible problems with their cams and pinning them is an expensive solution.Which is why a 98 SHO can be had for the price of a 92 Q.

Also your disparaging remarks some cars others here care about, are not appreciated, this is not a punk forum where disrespecting each others cars is accepted discourse.

You would do well, to reconsider some of your recent posts they are the reason, some members have replied with a lack of courtesy to you.

I think we are really starting to go off on a tangent here in this thread and I will lock it before any more harm is done.
