hello! and hoping to find some info here. we have(wife and I) a once real nice 1994 Q45, she only has 147k on the clock. as of late she has developed a real bad idle, thottle control issue.

1) found out from lurking here that anything other then oem plugs they don't like. WHAT IS THE OEM PLUG MAKE/NUMBER? it had autolite in it and that is what i put back in it.

2) several vacuum leaks i have discovered and repaired.

3) there are no codes to read at the ECM.

my questions are above and i am also going to check the connection at the MAF. anything other then the above I should look for? as of late we hate to drive the car for the above mentioned reason. we are the 3rd owners of the car and have owned it for 4 yrs just problems have came up over the past 6 or so months.

any help is much appreciated, if we can't fix her we will get ride of her. :frown:

Those are the wrong plugs. You need NGK's, best to order them from Infiniti of Scotsdale so you get OEM ones, which are NGK. That could for sure be part of your problem. The MAF connectors on the 94's were for sure an issue, cleaning that is great first step. So do that and pitch the autolites out of there, for some reason all Nissans only like NGK's.

It's also about the time the first fuel pump usually fails. Listen for a loud whine from the trunk - like a swarm of bees.

:welcome: to NICO!

I would also check your fuel injectors... especially if your idle feels like it's "bouncing" when you're sitting still, foot on the brake, and car in drive (like at a stop light).

We have different engines so this may not have any effect for you, but I have had excellent luck running several cans of injector cleaner through my engine whenever is starts to act up.

My gen Q has flimsy coilpacks and they are frequently cited as the boogeyman when the idle begins to "stumble". If they weren't 80 bucks a piece I'd buy 8, but I am far too cheap for that.

My suggestion is to run some heavy duty injector cleaner through it twice. See if that makes any difference. Of course, you should also check the things mentioned above as well. I'd clean the MAF and it's connector and go over all the vacuum hoses you can reach. Check them for cracks and splits. As mentioned, those plugs have to go.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info. alittle more that I forgot to mention. replaced all vac line/hoses last year while spyder was off for 2 bad injectors. (found by reading code flash at ECM) thought that was problem this round, but have no codes.

At idle or in gear anything other then WOT the car has a constant miss (for lack of a better word) not so much like a spark plug (still based off of recommendations will go to NGK) kinda like it loading up until you hold your foot through the floor and once she passes the stumbling stage she pulls hard again.

On the left side of the TB there is a motor(like a IAC or something like that) on the right side is a TB sensor (again terminology) could this also be a problem?

I come from the world of old school 5.0 mustangs and had a better grasp of the in and outs of the old fullie 302. way to many hoses and gadgets under the hood of this old girl. which leaves me with more questions then answers. what is this? wonder what that controls, does that need to be there....ect...

so I come before the great and all knowing INFINITY GODS looking for devine guidence and answers....

so for the replies so far... THANK YOU!!!

....and the correct spark plug is NGK PFR5G-11.

http://q45.org/sparkplugs.html

No CEL? Are you sure you don't have a fuel pump/FPCU problem? Has your fuel pump been changed? Is the fuel pump loud when listening from the trunk? Can you hear it at all from the driver's seat? Listen for the bees Heath was asking about and let us know.

The fuel pump is original, after reading all post again went and started the old girl up and yes, fuel pump you can hear from the drivers seat. I was also starting to be concerned with the cat-converters as well. the car is running rich (lean) depends on how you have become used to calling out a excess fuel burning from the exhaust.

she has started smoking some as well on start ups. PLEASE understand we do like this car, but i don't want to start throwing parts at it until she is new from end to end.(would be nice though)

QUESTIONS??????

1) WHAT SHOULD FUEL PRESSURE BE?

2) COMPRESSION LOW AND HIGH? OR WHAT SHOULD BE EXPECTED WITH 147K CAR?

3) JUST TO MAKE ALL AWARE, I HAVE ALWAYS USED M-1 IN THE CAR AND PREM. FUEL, CHANGE THE AIR AND FUEL FILTER EVERY 30K. ( I DO NOT HAVE A BOOK ON THIS CAR) FOLLOWED GUT INSTINCT AN ALL WAS FINE UNTIL THE LAST FEW MONTHS.

THANKS FOR THE INFO AND WHAT EVERY ELSE COMES TO MIND......

I WILL REPORT AS I GET STATS AND INFO FROM YOU ALL... AGAIN THANKS..

ONE MORE THING WHAT IS CEL?

Welcome to NICO! You have arrived at the right place.

CEL is Check Engine Light

Where are you located so we can know the climate?

Here's a link to a thread about Fuel Pressure testing.

So I agree, throwing loads of parts at an older car doesn't make sense. here is what I would start with:
1. OEM Plugs, get RID of the autolites, these cars just do not like anything but Japanese cooking
2. Replace the fuel pump, 100% for sure if you hear it that is on the way out so this will just hard fail soon.
3. Clean the MAF connector on your own or find a pro to help you
4. Run some high quality fuel injector cleaner and use it reguarly. At the minimum get some Techron at Costco in the 6 pack, use 2 the first time. Use redline, royal purple, Amsoil or another super-brand if you can find it, I alternate Techron and Amsoil's products. Mobil One is fine oil, but keep in mind they pulled a fast one on consumers a few years ago and their standard 5/30 and 10/30 are no longer really full synthetic. Only their 0/40 is really synth from what has been reported here, but I don't use it so I haven't really paid that much attention. I switched over to Amsoil 2 years ago and will use only Amsoil or Redline in my 3 cars from now on. Wife mobile drinks dino juice cause she's to lazy to pick up the good stuff. Amsoil IMHO is the best oil fo the money, period. A former member talked me into trying it and I buy it for $9.99 a quart locally and it rocks.

Give those a try and then see where you stand...Infiniti of Scotsdale IOS gives a disocunt to members, call them (don't order on-line), tell them your a NICO member and want to get started with them on the fuel pump. I don't know if your doing your own repairs, for me the day I bought my 84' 300ZX was the last day I touched my own car, but tons of people here work on their own cars. For me I'll pay a pro to do it and do what i do well (which rarely involves getting getting my hands oily). But the dealership hasn't seen my car in 5 years, and will not probably ever see it again except for an oil change special (where they put in my oil).

See if you can find someone to give you a referal on a shop, you still didn't tell us where you live, we can probably help you in many of the major areas of the country.

Autolites are known to destroy VH series engines.

It's in the previous posts.
