Hey all, new to this forum, but I have had my '90 S13 for what seems like forever, maybe 8 years. Anyway, I have been debating for the last few days whether to do the RB25DET or the SR20DET and I think I am going to go ahead and do the SR, finally. One of my questions is, when mounting the Greddy VSPL, does it require that the steel bumper support be permanantly removed? I have always seen pictures of it installed and the support not there, but who would take a picture of an intercooler with the bumper in the way. I would really like to be able to keep the bumper support on there in the end. If this is not possible, does anybody have any suggestions for one that will fit. I have been considering buying one from either johhnyracecar or custom coach of america and making my own piping.

ThanksGriff

Not sure how it fits on the S13, but I would imagine it would be similar... On my S14, I have the intercooler mounted with the bumper support still intact - I just had to grind down the support by about an inch to get everything to fit.

I have an image of it somewhere on my computer if you would like to see..

Hey, thanks for the reply. I have been searching through the pages looking for pictures and I have seen a few. If you can easily find the picture that would be great. I don't mind trimming the bumper support a bit, but I really do not want to elininate it. Thanks again.

how come youre so set on keeping it? just in case of an accident or something? you can use the support if you want, you just have to cut it up a little bit to get it to fit....

Yea, pretty much want to keep it in case any type of accident might happen, with the bumper support there even if the car is a loss, at least the motor would stand a better chance of surviving. Other than that, I just like the idea of it being there, lol.

On our type of car the front frame rails will flex. The support acts as a crossmember. It's a good idea to keep the bumper support and trim it according to your instruction sheet.

When you're doing the install, it's a very simple process to pull the support and trim. The only downside is that the support blocks off direct airflow to part of the IC.Maybe that's why people pull it.

Thanks dude, that rocks. If there is room after I cut it, maybe I can weld a little more reinforcement into it. Got some time but I think I am gonna have to go out and buy some new cut-off wheels for the Makita, lol.

I had to trim about 1.5in off of my support but it fits close I really didnt want to hack it all up. I could send you a picture to better explain myself if you want to see whats involved.

Yeah while the pic that was posted gives you an idea the US support is a good bit thicker than the one depicked.

I cut mine and was able to make it clear. I just took a good bit of time and cut it a little at a time to take off the least about as possible.

This will be hard to understand now but when you see it MAYBE it will make sense. The bumper support is two halfs...a front half and rear half. I think about the best way to do it is to cut the back have loose (mostly spot welds, you can drill them out), but just remove the piece in between the pieces that connect to the frame rails (the center part of it). Basically you will have to remove about half the thickness of the support just between the frame rails. Then if you want you can weld a piece back to give it a little support.

I will say like the other dude it blocks about 30% of my intercooler but it really wasn't an issue for me since I am running the stock bumper and haven't cut holes in it or anything.
