Hey everyone,New here and I think this post is obvious. I'm shopping around for my first car and I was originally browsing for a honda civic 99-00 si. Long story short, I came across a deal I thought was good on a '95 Nissan 240sx.

http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-car...66444

First off, is there any light reading I can find anywhere on the car. General maintainence and it's reliability?I want to know all the basic problem issues with the car and what I should be looking for when I go tomorrow to see it. Are there any common issues with them? I keep hearing about rusted rocker panels. Where are they and how can i check that?

What is it going to cost me to do an engine swap on it? I don't know anything about swaps on a 240sx. I know a lot about civic swaps. I'm assuming I can't us a K series transmission with an SR engine. I'm thinking about doing the obvious SR20DET swap somewhere down the line, how much work is involved in it and what am I looking at paying for something like that. I've found a place in Toronto that imprts the JDM engines that sells them for between 2 and 3 grand with under 80k km's. (complete engine and transmission and all).

I know this forum will probably be bias, but is the 240sx a better buy than a 99-00 civic SI?

Thanks so much everyone

i respect civics, but the 99-00 si is eh, not that good. youll still want to swap it or turbo it and a kseries swap is 2-3 times as much as an SR.as for info, read the stickies at the top of the gen chat page

haha, lets try to be helpful, at least a little bit.

What are you going to use the SX for. If its for Daily driving purposes, then buy a Civic and save the SX and an SR20 from the mundane life that is daily driving.Even if its going to be a drag car, i still vote Civic

Im amazed how before you have even driven the car you are already thinking SR20, why the SR20 specifically? JDM tyteism? Fanboi mentality?

Nonetheless get the Civic, its a much better deal anyway.

Well, I wont lie, I've never driven one or read much about them, I'm just a huge import fan and I've always loved the look and styling of the s14. (closest I'll ever get to a skyline R33).I know I love the body, but that's why I'm doing the research now into what the engine and handling is like.

It'll be a daily driver, MAYBE somewhere down the road it might get taken to the drag track a few times. But mostly a daily driver. Main reason for looking at it so hard is I know it has much higher horsepower and torque over the civic.

For about the same money as the 240sx I'm looking at, I can get a mint 99 civic SI couple, manual with 240k on the engine. Do a complete B16 swap and have a car with very similar power numbers.

Any other imput is very much welcomed.

For you, yes. The Civic EX is the Civic SI in canada. Your SI is our SIR and the SIr is INSANE on insurance. Hence why I'm not getting it.

The 99 Civic si couple I'm going to see tomorrow has a d16y7 I believe in it. It'll get me through the winter and then I'll do the swap in the spring.I know it's cheaper for parts and upgrade and all, but when I came across this deal on the SX, I thought maybe I should look into it.

Do this...

Step 1: Buy a 240sxStep 2: Crash itStep 3: Buy another one so mine becomes more valuable.

You're in Toronto.

It' makes more sense for you, being a newer driver and in a colder more snowy part of the world to have a FWD car like a Civic rather than a 240SX, even if you get a Canada model with the VLSD option.

240's suck in the ice and snow, plain and simple. Hope that helps.

Engine would blow if you set the vtec that low...??? Any lower than 4500 rpms and your risking the valves.

Thank you to those with helpful replies.

All night I was thinking the exact same thing. RWD in the snow? Especially if I plan an SR20DET swap and some upgrades. I don't think power + RWD + snow = good...

I think I might still take a peak at the car today anyway, but I think it's off my list.
