With 97k miles. I really was impressed with the car as that was my price range but I'm wondering since there are many 2008 owners here, is there a list of things you'd advise me to check or have checked before I get started?

I have read all about the CVT and the extended warranty. I'm interested in hearing suggestions from everyone on things I can do preventive wise to get the best experience I can with the Rogue

Thank you all who answer!

welcome aboard. i have the same car as you. i too bought mine used, at 29,000 miles. the list below is exactly what i have done, in the exact order as follows.

if i were you, i would do the following immediately:
1. change engine oil & oil filter
2. replace engine air intake filter
3. replace cabin air filter
4. replace all window wipers
5. check trans fluid (our warranty is good till 120k/10year - so dont ruin it by not checking your transmission fluid level at the very least)
6. drain transfer case
7. drain rear differential fluid
8. inspect brake calipers & re-lube the slider pins. our calipers are KNOWN for seizing, boots taring, too darn early. ask me how i know :yesnod and while you are in there, check your brake pads. while you are at it, drain your brake fluid.
9. drain & refill engine coolant
10. spark plugs

the reason you want to do all of those, is odds are = they were never done (other than the oil change & engine air filter). this way you can start your OWN list of things that you did, and you know are in good condition. and NO, do NOT rely upon the dealer and its BS "multi-point inspection" crap. they dont do squat. you should have seen the things i was removing from my car, at only 29k that should have been found during their inspection. i went back and DEMANDED money back for all the things i had to change the first week of owning the car. i saved the torn wipers, filthy filters, and brought them in to show the manager.

If the seller didn't provide you with a Carfax report, I'd pony up the money and see if the CVT was replaced.

I would echo the statement above - I think if you have an unknown history you have to start with "catching up" on all the typical maintenance items. If you can do the work yourself, the bill will not be much. If the previous owner is able to show you a receipt for the work performed and the mileage it was performed at, I would consider that as valid evidence it was done. Otherwise, no proof so assume it was never done.

At 97K miles I would also look towards changing the spark plugs with OEM Nissan plugs. Spark plugs are a wear item, and even though they last a lot longer nowadays (than the old copper ones), it is an easy item to change yourself and relatively inexpensive.

The brake fluid also likely needs to be changed. It is a wear item, but most people skip it because it is a little more expensive to get done. Personally, I think of all the fluids it's the most challenging/time consuming since it is not as simple as removing a single bolt, putting the bolt back in, then filling it up. If you are considering the brake fluid change, I would wait to see if you have any calipers that need to be changed first (because then you have to bleed at least part of the system anyways).

With 97K miles, what I would also recommend while you are doing all of this work (and when winter is over if you live in a snowy region) is to take the time and clean things while you are changing them and have access to them. This will help you see any leaks that are currently happening and not just say "Oh someone must have spilled some oil". If you (yourself) are doing work such as changing the air filter, etc... then you'll be able to easily remove components to get a good cleaning in. I don't usually recommend the old pressure washer method (you do risk damaging things if you don't seal off certain electronics), so this gives you a chance to get right in there with the cleaner and do it by hand. Plus, it'll look incredible compared to how it looks now and give you a sense of accomplishment :)

Good luck with your new ride!

Sorry for bumping an old thread, but per the rules, I didn't want to start a new one since my question about plugs was kind of answered. My question pertaining to the spark plugs, do you guys have a part# for the OEM ones? I would like to do the ones on my girlfriends before we drive from TX to CA in a few weeks.

And my recommendation on brakes, spend good money on quality rotors and pads. The brakes on these in my opinion are far too small for a small SUV/crossover. I found the best combo so far are is a quality set of drilled/slotted rotors (I used PowerStop) and EBC pads. I was having issues with warping, and I had a feeling it was because they were getting too hot. I have had them for almost 2 years and they are still nice and smooth. Before I was doing rotors probably once a year and pads every 6 months. I have only done the pads once since I switched everything to a better quality and the rotors are still good.
