New Here just bought a Pearl White 1996 Q45 I just got it monday. It is down on power and from searching it seems like it could be the knock sensors but i wanted to get your opinions before i started in the wrong place.

The car idles fine and seems like everything works fine. But anything past 1/4 throttle, and it seems like it gets slower or just rpms rise and it doesn't go anywhere. It seems like the power just goes away when i give it any kind of throttle. If im on the highway and i kick it down the rpms will rise with the lower gear but it will not go anywhere, and sometimes it even goes slower. at 1/4 throttle it has more power than it does at any other throttle possition. Also when the rpms rise the power seems to drop less and less. Please help me out. I know there is a monster lurking in my engine bay just need to release it.

well, I hope you negotiated knock sensors into the selling price.

Not to be a smart a.. , I would try a couple of cans of BG 44k, can't hurt.

does sound like knock sensors or a MAF problem,

would you trust a MAF off ebay? or does anyone have an extra one i could try. to see if it would work i live in louisville, KY. I could give you money if you let me try one. Or would you trust cleaning it with anything? My idle is rock solid and it runs good it just has no power. Where could i get BG 44k? Deffinatley negotiated a fix in the price :).

Thanks for the replies!

Take it to dealer for diagnosis.........then decide if you want to do the work or let them.

Do you get a lot of soot our of your exhaust? If unsure, check with white paper and rev it a bit.

no soot that i can see ill try the paper trick in a few minutes when i get a break from work. It is getting fairly bad gas mileage i haven't really driven it much but the gas mileage is down around 12-15 i would say.

If it is the MAF it will get successively worse very quickly and more and more sooty until plugs are fouled (among other things) and your milage will drop under 10mpg.

If your paper comes out clean, I think we can safely exclude the MAF as the culrpit.

i just checked the tail pipes, and they are clean put my finger inside and rubbed it around and it came out fairly clean.

How much do you think it would be for a dealer diagnosis?will they just put an OBD-II scanner on it?

I think the dealer charges approx $100 for an engine diagnostic if memory serves.

Sam Swope Infinti is a busy outfit though if you want to get in make an appt soon, if you figure it out before the appt you can always cancel.

Sometimes they are tied up for weeks.Once when they couldnt accomodate me for like 3 weeks they suggested St Mathews Imports has a good rep.

>Should< have a consult I hope.

Palmer i think i have met you before. Do you know Joey Malambri. I think you came over to my apartment with him one time about a year and a half ago. I talked to you about your Q. I used to have an 88 Turbo II Rx7 and my room mate has a s13 with sr swap.

EDIT: I just drove it and the fuel pump is deffinately humming/buzzing. slightly but its audible

Read Q45 tech advice--get a god consult diagnosis before starting theEXPENSIVE swapping of parts. Much lower cost and much less frustrating. Too many possibilities here--transmission, fuel filter, fuel pump, throttle position sensor, dirty air filter, dirty injectors/valves etc, etc,

It should run pretty strong--not quite like 1st gen, but strong.

Ok last night after the car had been sittin for abou 4 hours i drove it and it drove like im assuming it should it had full power as far as i can tell. Also when i came to work this mroning it had full power again but after i had driven it for about 15 minutes it just lost all the power and went back to how it was.

Sidv.. Another thing to check is the CAS...

On another Q I am working with it has this EXACT thing... It sounds to me like the connector is dirty or something, something electrically connection related.....

I am going to meet up with the gentleman and we are going to clean the CAS connector..... If its not the MAF (the 96 had the updated connector which isnt as common to fail like the early Qs), this is another possiblity..

Pay the 1 hr labor and have them consult it... A nissan dealer will work as they can plug right in.....

BTW we should have a NICO louisville Q meet sometime!!! :)

I didn't even make it to the Infiniti dealer my freind has an OBDII scanner and we put it on "Knock sensor 1 circuit check". So I guess the knock sensor is bad. I am going to go ahead and replace both. Other than the hoses and the gaskets what else should i look for under the intake manifold when i have it off. I saw wes' write up. i was wondering if any one knew the size of the hoses under there.

The hoses are all specialized molded hoses that need to come from the dealer. About 30-40 little specilaized hoses... call Joe at 1-888-216-5328 after reading Wes's "Plenum Job" thread.
