ok, i am currently in the market for a y33 q45. i am curious to know what active suspension means? is this an adjustable suspension?if it is, which is better, the standard strut/spring or active?because i do plan on going air suspension, is there an addon type of unit like the ls400 have where you can adjust more of the active suspension?\and i also noticed that people with active suspension wish that their vehicles were equipped with the stand strut/spring combo, why is this?thank youCharley

On the Y33's active suspension, the stiffness (or damping) of the shock absorbers is varied by sending an electrical current to each shock. Normally, this stiffness is controlled automatically, depending on driving conditions. However, a dashboard-mounted switch allows the shocks to be stiffened manually, by selecting the "Sport" switch position.

Quote »I also noticed that people with active suspension wish that their vehicles were equipped with the stand strut/spring combo, why is this?[/quote]Most of the problems with active suspension were on the earlier G50 models, some of which use a much more sophisticated (and more complex) system which relies on hydraulic pressure being diverted to each shock as needed. Due to the extra complexity, these systems tend to be more prone to problems (which explains why some folks wish their cars had conventional suspension instead).

The only major disadvantage to the electrical active syspension system on the later Y33 models is that the special shocks are considerably more expensive to replace than conventional shocks (and are apparently only available from Nissan). Also, the Y33 active syspension is generally regarded to provide inferior performance to the earlier G50 system.

First, the only "active" in the latter t and ae suspensions is the valve acutuation of the dampeners. It is not an active nor even semi-active suspension like the earlier G50 Q45a.

Secondly, they seem to be ultimaitley reilable, but will wear by 80K miles or so depeding on driving conditions. They are about a 15% premium over the OEM standard shock absorbers.

Personally, I thought the standards were sufficiently stiff. But the springs were a little soft to me, while roll stiffnes is greater than the G50. I went to Eibachs and KYB SR Special for a firmer and more controlled ride, a little less luxurious.
