Hey everyone.

Like the title says I'm new to the site. Just picked up a '98 Pathfinder (XE I believe). I had a '97 Pathfinder SE years ago but it got into a fight with a 4Runner, not my fault I should add, before I could do anything to it. So I'm excited to see what will happen with this one.

Few questions though:

For starters I would like to know if I have keyless entry and how the heck do I figure out what key fob I need to purchase. The truck didn't come with a fob upon purchase, but my old one had it. Different models, I know. But if I did, I don't have the FCC and serial number to compare to. Is this something the dealer will tell me if I provided them with my VIN?

Also, I like the look of the steering wheel and the instrument panel of the 99.5+ Pathfinders. Will I be able to swap these in with minimal headaches? No real reason other than aesthetics and personal preference. There are a few in the local wrecker I could pick up pretty cheap.

Thanks in advance!

A dealer should be able to tell you about your key fob but they will charge you a ton for a new one. Look elsewhere if you want to buy a key fob.

As far as general fob compatibility questions, check out this thread if you haven't already, specifically the links I posted in this comment.[/quote]

In regards to the steering wheel, I did a swap on mine and overall wouldn't recommend it. I'll likely end up swapping the old wheel back in at some point. The reason I wouldn't recommend it is unless you have someone's guarantee that it works, you may end up spending a sizable amount of money on a new wheel and airbag (and more if what you get doesn't fit, or isn't the right shade of gray). Once you have one that fits, you'll have to splice the connector from your old airbag onto the new one. After all is said and done you won't have any guarantees that the airbag will work properly when you need it and may put you in a funny spot as far as liability with your insurance company if you had an accident and they found out you "modified" the airbag, and also if you end up selling the truck later.

That all being said, if you feel like tackling it, do it to it; just food for thought. It's likely possible, though I can't offer any guarantees.
