Hi,

I'm new here. I've had a 93 HB 5spd 4cyl for a few months new. Fixed what it needed and put some 31's on it.

Right now I sold my only turbo car and want to try to my hand at slappin a turbo on the truck. Just wanting to run 5psi for a little better hwy driving and towing.

This is going to be DIY except for the exhaust manifold. It's a budget build and I'm wanting to do all of this for around $500. From what I have read you can use a 300zx fuel pump and I only need a FMU or boost referenced FPR. No need for an intercooler at 5psi.

What are your thoughts?

Yeah, turbos have been run without intercoolers before, so thats not a radical departure there, but if theres room for even a modest one, then its a good idea. 500 dollars is not enough, and thats almost certain. Here's an actual kit...http://www.jgstools.com/turbo/ka24et.html I saw your username over at ka-t, its good that you have found that.

Well I have found used headers for $150-250. Everything is going to be used or made by me. Since it's internally wastegated I won't need any of that and I can make the oil fittings with brake hardline and things from a hardware store.

I got no idea what the fuel pump costs or what the regulator is going to cost either. That is the only part I'm unsure of.

Granted $500 cap is a bit low, but I don't see it being too much higher than that.

Yes I'm over on KA-T. Haha, actually I'm on about 5 differents sites just trying to get enough information to see exactly how to do this. I want to hit it hard so I don't lose momentum and interest.

Sounds cool, just make sure to check steering shaft clearence, and you might want a heat shield for the master cylinder/booster if its getting close. They even got those turbo wraps, too. IDK about the fuel pump and regulator either, but they are commonplace. The stock injectors are 270cc, and I think are good for up to 7psi of boost. The stock pistons are good for about the same, (comparably weak ringlands). Of course you have to fasten the charge tube to the throttle body with a carburettor style hat that screws down nice and tight. And the stock MAF sensor is integrated into the throttle body, IDK but I thought the MAF sensor was supossed to go before the turbo? Then there's the IAT sensor, but you might be able to get away without running that.

You know, I just emembered an idea I was tossing around a few months back. It was a remote mount turbo that mounts up under the bed behind the drivers seat and not all the way at the back of the truck. It would actually tuck away quite nicely in there, and without turbo manifolds. Lag isn't as bad as some people think, or else they wouldn't make these kits for Corvettes, Silverado's, etc...

Yeah I've thought about remote mount turbo. But I just get nervous with an electric pump taking the oil back to the engine. Also if I was 2wd and never went mudding it be would alright. I 'm just concerned of it getting covered in mud and water and snow.

I'll knock that idea around since all I would need is the turbo, scavenger pump, T3 flange. I could make the rest of the kit out of tubing and route the intake between the bed and cab and make a shield for the turbo..

Plus the truck would have little to no down time and worst comes to worst I ride around with open exhaust. Instead of worrying about fitment isses under the hood Hmmm...

There isn't alot of room between the bed and the cab, that would require some kind of flattened out hollow thing that would rattle around. Maybe the traditional turbo is the best way for your 4x4. Thats one bad thing about remote mount turbos, the exposure. Corvette and camaro systems have the turbos tucked away under body work somehow, and they don't get exposed so much, but on the idea I just told you, it would be hit.

Well I looked at just the scavenge pumps and they are at least $250. So that kind of goes out of the window as far as cost.

If I can get past the exhaust manifold without breaking the bank, the rest should be pretty easy.

So I know the fuel pump is for a 300ZX TT but does it matter what year it's from?

Little update on this project.

Got my turbo manifold from here for it. Have my spare TB to tig weld an extension to.And have my T3 turbo, but after looking at it, it has some nice in and out play along with some bent fins and up and down play.

Got a buddy that has a complete T3 without a hotside that's givin that to me for free. Just have to find a compatible hotside.

Or just try this turbo to see if it lasts. I'm told it won't last very long at all with that shaft play.

Still have to buy my FMU and fuel pump, and misc oil fittings and exhaust system components. Got somebody to lend me a wideband for tuning it.

awesome, what kind of t3 are you using? super 60 or whatever's availible, i wouldve thought about something smaller... anyway the torquey motor with low compression should really work nice! cant wait to see your results!

Thanks guys!

It's a T3 with a .60 A/R from an SVO mustang. But I think the free one will get a .48 exhaust housing for faster spool. I want full spool by 2k rpm. It's a truck, I use it like one, so I want a truck power band.

Putting an electric fan on it this weekend, mainly for MPG, but it helps power too!

Also got a Good used center housing for the turbo with good impellers. Plan on swapping that over to the hot and cold part of the other turbo.
