Hey guys, I spent the last couple days working on a project of mine. New custom headlights with halos! At first, it seemed really intimidating to put the headlights in the oven and pry them open. Especially because the 2008-2009 headlights were permasealed, so I figured 2010+ were too. Thank god they weren't. It actually turned out to be a lot easier than I would've thought.

Image
Last time I would see my headlights stock.

Image
Opened up and thoroughly disassembled.

Image
Painted everything satin black to give it a stealth look.

Image
I mock fitted everything. You can see I also tinted the turn signal lens, I think it looks hella sick :chuckle:

Image
One headlight done! You can see the halos are yellow, they had to be because I wanted LED ones. They're actually a richer yellow than what you see here.

Image
Here it is with the halos on.

And here are a few pics of the finished product, back on the car:

Man that looks great!! I think I'll do that to mine soon. I'd love to get rid of the ugly turn signal and add halos too.

Thanks guys! It's definitely nerve racking to put your headlights in the oven lol, but you only need to put it in at 230 degrees for 10 minutes, which isn't even hot enough to melt anything. Worth the results.

Props to tackling this project yourself :dblthumb: Overall the work looks very good and clean, and the fact that you modded your stock housing vs buying a cheap tacky pair off eBay is a big plus. Personally, I'm not a fan of halos on a car that isn't a BMW, it just never appealed to me. But yours look good due to the fact that it is the stock housing and not just some cheap one from eBay

Thanks! Ya I've heard of the terrible quality of ebay lights. But they don't even have any for 2010+ coupes so I didn't have a choice haha. And being on a very low student budget, I couldn't afford to have someone else do it for me

I disconnected the parking light wire from the turn signal bulb, I kind of hated the orange bulb.

I hate that orange bulb as well.. I tried replacing them with chrome coated ones but the bulbs I ordered didnt fit.. I referenced the manual but its wrong. May have to disconnect the parking light wire as well.[/quote]

Ya they were correct. 90mm for the low beam and 100mm for the high beam. I think they could even be bumped up a size if you wanted, so 100 and 110.

Haha I don't think I'll be doing others. I was scared of messing up my own headlights, not gonna risk someone else's.

Anywhere specific on the web where I could learn to do this too? I know how to bake and open the housings, but I am looking for the specifics like exactly how to mount, run wires etc for a quality installation.

Kind of reminds me of my coupe when I had those LEDs on too =)

What techniques did you use in prying it open? (i.e what corner did you find more easy to open). Did you reseal?

And more importantly, does it fog up at all? When I did headlights on my old altima, it fogged up after a month later =(

Clean, although I would have thrown some DRLs where the parking light normally is. If I ever did a retro thats the way I would have done it. An actual bar from a MB or Porsche though, not strips.

I started off going all the way around the headlights with a flat head screwdriver. I think the easiest corner to open first would be the one near the high beam. Sealed it with the existing sealant. It's only been 5 days, so far so good, no fogging. If it does fog though, I have some butyl rubber to reseal it with.

I can't imagine what a bar replacing the DRLs would look like. Any examples?

Speaking of DRLs, I was thinking of replacing the strips on the lower bumper with 5k strips to match the halos, or even an actual DRL bar if I can find one cheap enough. Thoughts?

Something LIKE this. An actual module, that would be molded into the headlight or elsewhere.

Ya that's what I've been looking for. Do you think turn signals would look good if I put them in the lower bumper where I have my strips now?

Depends on how you do it. It could, if done right. Id check DOT rules though, there may be a minimum height requirement.

looks great, nice job !

what is the easiest way to take off the headlights? is it possible to take them off without removing the front bumper?

i have baked a few sets of headlights back in the day, so i am not worried about the mod, but the actual removal process of the headlights seems like a pain in the @$$...

and lastly, i was curious if the ac headlights have high adjustment screw in them [to adjust the light output angle]... do you recall seeing them when you had them out?

thanks.

Not possible without taking off the bumper. There are 3 screws holding it on, 2 of which are actually covered by the bumper.

I think there is an adjustment screw. I didn't want to mess with it because mine are aimed perfectly
