new head unit, no sound

i just installed a new sterio in my car. it's about the 50th sterio i've ever installed and it's all wired up correctly at least in the dash area, but there's no sound coming out of the speakers. the 2 rear speakers are pretty new and the head unit works fine. i've also checked all the fuses in the kick panel by the clutch. i plan on tracing the speaker wires tomorrow unless someone knows of something that it could be. i garentee it's not in the wiring in the dash area. me and 3 others have checked it and we're not electrically illiterate. any help welcome.

were the speakers working before you installed the new stereo, or was there just no head-unit prior?

no head unit prior but i have heard them work before when a friend owned the car. he doesnt know whats wrong either.
