new head gasket...what else?

i will be changing the head gasket on my 92 240 vert, ka24de, for the first time.what else should be changed now? i got a new water pump (initial problem which led to a leaking/melted valve cover gasket around the sark plugs, fouling them up) and lower temp nisimo thermastat.after i did the valve cover gasket, spark plugs, and wires last week, my car almost immeadiately began spewing white smoke and water vapors all over the curb out the exhaust pipe, when turned on. it had previously sat undriven for a few months too...any suggestions for a first timer?
