you take a gauge similar to a compression tester, and you fill the cylinder up with pressure and check for a drop in pressure. You should refer to nissan service manual for exact specs, but if you see a lose in pressure over a a few seconds, then the valve guides or seals are worn and this would be a place for oil to leak throught into the combustion chamber and cause oil burning. Are you sure it is not a coolant leak? What color is the smoke? Does it happen at idle. Does your oil level drop significantley?
