Got my hardbody from a used car lot and supposedly the guy tells me he just changed the clutch, drove fine on the short test drive and drove fine on the way home but no real way to tell without going on a longer drive right. So took her out this weekend to put some miles on and about 40 miles from home on a hilly road it starts losing power like the ctluch was slipping the engine was revving but it wasn't putting that power to the wheels, couldn't get above 40 mph barely limped to a parking lot smelled like burning clutch to me too. Shut it down for 10 mins to cool down, started back up and it drove home with no problems. I'm stumped at first I thought either he never changed the clutch, or they installed it wrong, or its another issue not related (bad timing maybe?). Gas mileage is terrible so far too I'm almost at a 1/2 tank with only 80 miles driven. Something just isnt right going to take it to my trusted mechanic but wanted to see if you guys have any opinions.

How does the clutch pedal feel?
Does it have some free-play?
For someone to tell you its new, but is actually shot would take a big pair.
Maybe the clutch master push rod is adjusted too long and always partially releasing the clutch?
Just thinking out loud here.

The pedal doesn't feel right it doesnt catch till its almost all the way up, I've driven cars/trucks with a brand new clutch before its usually the opposite. Hopefully its as simple as you say and it just needs some adjustment, the guy has been in business for 15+ years so you're right I don't see why he would lie about installing something and not really do it but I don't have much faith in his mechanics.

Might be a bad slave cylinder. When the clutch assembly is changed, the position of the piston in the slave cylinder changes. It enters an area were there is a lot of wear and a build up of corrison causing the piston to stick in return causes poor clutch performance. Another issue could be a bad master clutch cylinder or a rusted steel line going from the master clutch cylinder to the slave cylinder. It is easy to tell if he changed the clutch assembly. If he is talking to himself and spending a lot of time at the bar,he changed it.
